Strange things in Missouri
As I sit here posting on GLP there is some sort of creature that has been squawking and screeching in the trees on my street for the past week or two. And now tonight another strange thing, the sky is overcast and has a weird greenish tint to it. Can we get auroras here in the Kansas City area? Would I be seeing that in a cloudy sky?

It could be auroras from the recent heavy solar activity...

Yes you can, and that is aurora.

As for the noises, maybe your neighbors are kinky.

Re: Strange things in Missouri
Wow, so you think that is really auroras! Cool!

As for the noise, I actually went out with a flashlight the other night and looked up into the trees. I saw some eyes reflect back to me so I´m guessing it´s some kind of screeching owl. It has apparently decided to take up residence on our street in recent days. It´s just so creepy to hear it, even while I´m inside the house.

I´m about three hours (as the 70-mph car drives) directly southwest from KC, and our sky is finally clear, after nights and nights of cloud cover. And it´s beautiful. But it SO doesn´t have a green tinge to it.

It´s not fair. I want auroras here too. NO FREAKIN´ FAIR.

Hmph.

Re: Strange things in Missouri
duuuude, im in KC, MO. yes i saw a greenish tint through the clouds, its not clear enough here to tell if it is aurora or not.

lets talk about things that go screech in the night!

we are tracking a critter here in the woods that screams. it is not a screech owl. it shows up in colder weather at night. the first time i heard it i almost jumped the fence to go help the poor little girl that was getting attacked, then the sound changed into what can only be described as a very angry little monkey man. screaming and kind of cussing like yosemite sam. lol. its not a wild cat. its not the racoons. ive been trying to get a good recording of it and maybe i will this winter.

it´s some kind of viscious critter. tell me about what you are hearing.

1549, you´ve been watching TV again. That said, you may not be to far off. Mothman has been seen all over America preceding disaters and for a few weeks afterwards.

I´m in Parkville.

Our neighbors actually called the police because they thought the screech was a woman screaming. The police said they gets calls all the time. It´s a mating call, common for this time of year. I can´t remember which animal. Not an owl though.

foxes can make a weird screeching sound. Had some in our neighborhood that sounded like a dog being tortured.

344 - are you sure its a small critter? Maybe its momo, the missouri monster. Your version of bigfoot. Supposedly its a 3-toed sasquatch, check for prints while your out. And a terrible stench.

I live in Missouri, the east side of the State, nothing unusual here. I have a parakeet that I trained to be content to stay perched on my shoulder, if there is any warning from nature I think my bird would start acting nervous. Bird especially will react to a change of nature´s doings.

parkville eh? cool. I never heard it over there. this thing i hear in liberty is freeeky.

amalia: no i´m not sure about much about this critter except what it sounds like. no stench. no tracks and we´ve lots of good soft mud around the creek with deer, raccoon, and other tracks. we´ve got owls, and foxes, maybe even an occaisional bobcat. coyotes to be sure.

yes the mo-mo has crossed my mind. i think i´ll capture this thing on digi-audio soon and give ya a listen.

Cool Dr. Love! Keep us updated on any new developments!

From what I have heard about momo reports, its usually most active during the summer months. But there have been reports into the late fall of them.

A Banshee is the ghost woman who screams warning of a death coming of someone´s loved one. Try telling those with Celtic blood its a myth.

Hi, OP here...surprised to see this thread resurrected! I´m in the south KC area and I´ll listen for the sound again tonight to see if I can describe it any better. Glad to know that someone else saw the green tint, looked very strange.

Cool to see so many KC area people on GLP. I sometimes wonder if anyone I know if a poster on GLP, it would be like two worlds colliding...real life and GLP life.

Re: Strange things in Missouri
I´m here in eastern Missouri, and I too have heard a screaming "thing" . . . once yesterday during the daylight (mid-day) and then again this afternoon. I´ve lived here for about 13 years and have never heard this before. I live in a small town, no wood around me. Does someone think it is perhaps an owl of some sort?

Re: Strange things in Missouri
I´m glad I read about it on GLP or I would have been calling the cops myself. Sounded like a scream, but then again more of a screech. Wierd sounding yet alarming!

We have done a lot of tent camping over the years, so I´m no stranger to the outdoors. Have never heard this sound before.

So far I have only heard it during the daylight hours. Would this rule out an owl? When have you heard this noise? Day or night?
