The observatory reported that the volcano's lava dome was 262 feet in diameter on August 30 and has now expanded to 394 feet. "The presence of the lava dome increases the possibility of an explosive eruption, but does not necessarily indicate that one will occur," the observatory said. "Short-lived explosions could produce an ash cloud that exceeds 20,000 ft above sea level......" ReadMore: Cleveland Activity - Color Code ORANGE : Alert Level WATCH 2011-09-06 16:08:56 - VAN/VONA: Observations of Cleveland Volcano from Tuesday September 6, 2011 show that the small lava dome in the summit crater has resumed growth and now fills the floor of the crater. In response, AVO is raising the Aviation Color Code to Orange and the Alert Level to Watch. A persistent thermal anomaly has been observed since September 3, probably marking the timing of resumed lava dome growth. The size of the dome as of August 30 when it appeared to have stopped growing was approximately 80 meters (262 feet)in diameter. The current dome is approximately 120 meters (394 feet) in diameter. If dome growth continues, lava flows onto the flanks of the volcano may develop but would not be hazardous to aviation. The presence of the lava dome increases the possibility of an explosive eruption, but does not necessarily indicate that one will occur. Short-lived explosions could produce an ash cloud that exceeds 20,000 ft above sea level. These events can occur without warning and may go undetected in satellite imagery for hours. Yeah, but a lot of the fallout would affect native folks in the area that are already having a bad year. Many have a subsistence existence (live off the land). It has already been gloomy and rainy all summer this year where I work part time in SW AK, so they sure don't need any more gloom. Things not growing well as it is. |

ReadMore: [link to www.washingtonpost.com] and here's the Alaska Volcano Observatory 2011-10-07 11:02:33 Status Report: The eruption of a lava dome in the summit crater of Cleveland Volcano continues. Satellite observations over the past week show that the edge of the dome is now at the level of the crater rim on the southwest and east-northeast sides, and may soon overflow the crater rim on these flanks. At present, most of the lava dome volume is contained within the summit crater, and thus not prone to gravitational collapse. No ash emissions have been detected during the current eruption which began in July, 2011, and AVO has received no other reports of activity at this volcano. If the lava dome continues to grow in the summit crater, the possibility of an explosive event increases. With continued lava dome growth, lava may eventually overflow the crater rim to produce a lava flow and/or collapse to produce pyroclastic flows. Sudden collapse of the effusing lava could result in the generation of a volcanic ash cloud. However, lava may continue to erupt without an explosive event. It is possible that explosions from the summit crater vent could produce ash clouds that may exceed 20,000 ft above sea level. These events can occur without warning and may go undetected in satellite imagery for hours. However, lightning associated with significant ash-producing events may be detected within minutes using an automated alarm system. [link to www.avo.alaska.edu] |

Volcano monitors say if the dome continues to grow, it could overflow the rim and increase the possibility of an explosion. The observatory says an eruption could send up an ash cloud 20,000 feet or more. The nearest village, Nikolski, is on another island about 50 miles east and has 18 permanent residents. The village was not considered in harm's way in previous eruptions of the volcano. |
