In order to move up the masonic ladder to higher and higher degrees you have to swear to hold some information secret, even from your family members.

This very act will place an artificial barrier of fear of reprisal from the organization between the freemason and his family. Consequently, many family members will become withdrawn from the freemason because they cannot trust him because they know that the freemason has made a vow the supersedes family bonds, even marriage. This choosing of an allegiance to an organization in lieu of his family is a demonstration of lack of character, lack of wisdom, and most importantly lack of dedication to the family.

I know several freemasons. One was in love with his grand daughter and tried to run off with her when she was 14. Luckily her parents intervened.
