Enda Kenny first prime minister to blast Vatican openly ever ?
On 13 July 2011 the Cloyne Report was published, detailing the investigation into allegations of child sexual abuse by 19 priests in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cloyne. Among the report's findings were the revelation that the vast majority of allegations made in the diocese were not reported to the Garda, as required by the Church's 1996 guidelines; that the Bishop of the Diocese, John Magee, and others had withheld full cooperation with the Government's investigation and had deliberately misrepresented his own response to the allegations; and that the Vatican itself had both refused to cooperate in the investigation and counseled the Diocese that the 1996 guidelines were not binding.

On 20 July, Kenny condemned the Vatican for its role in the scandal, stating that the Church's role in obstructing the investigation was a serious infringement upon the sovereignty of Ireland and that the scandal revealed "the dysfunction, disconnection, elitism and narcissism that dominate the culture of the Vatican to this day." He added that "the historic relationship between church and state in Ireland could not be the same again."

Kenny's attack on the Vatican was unprecedented by a high-level official in Ireland, whose formal relationship with the Catholic Church had long been viewed as intimate and inextricable.[citation needed] The speech was widely regarded as extraordinary, with Britain's Daily Mail newspaper commenting that "The astonishing attack was the first time that Ireland's Parliament has publicly castigated the Vatican instead of local church leaders during the country's 17 years of paedophile-priest scandals."[85] The Guardian remarked that " the political classes have...lost their fear, namely of the once almighty Roman Catholic church."

And the vatican responds...

The Vatican has recalled its envoy to Ireland following Taoiseach Enda Kenny's trenchant criticism of the Holy See’s role in covering up cases of clerical child sex abuse.

Deputy Vatican spokesman Father Ciro Benedettini said Papal Nuncio Archbishop Giuseppe Leanza, the Apostolic Nuncio of Ireland, had been recalled from Dublin for consultations in the wake of the Cloyne report.

The office of the papal nunciature in Dublin could not be contacted.

In language never used by an Irish leader, Mr Kenny last week accused the Vatican of downplaying the rape and torture of children in order to uphold its own power and reputation.

Closing embassy to the Vatican could save €2.4m - but at what cost?

PADDY AGNEW in Rome

Holy See takes dim view of countries that only have an ambassador to the Italian state

RATIONALISING Ireland’s diplomatic service in Rome could save the taxpayer €2.4 million.

That sum would be saved if Ireland moved its embassy to the Italian state to the site of its embassy to the Holy See, and in turn moved its Holy See ambassador to a base in an existing embassy in a neighbouring country.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny indicated this week in the wake of the Cloyne report that the Government might close the Irish Embassy to the Holy See.

First-time Irish visitors to Rome, on discovering that the Irish state runs two diplomatic missions in the Eternal City, often express surprise.

However, the point about the dual missions in Rome (and many other countries have two embassies here) is that they owe their existence to the Holy See’s desire to separate itself from the Italian state. It is the Holy See which refuses to accept an ambassador who is working out of the same building as the ambassador to Italy.
To some extent, the question goes back to the first World War, when there was only one national embassy in Rome. When both Austria and Germany, then at war with Italy, withdrew their diplomatic representation, the Holy See found itself without German or Austrian interlocutors.

Ooh your comment got my cogs working :-D

It will be VERY interesting and is very likely to happen!

RC Ireland is very likely to defect in great numbers, unlike Spain or South America. This will be a great blow to the vatican that it hasn't felt since the schism with Henry.

Not only will it lose most of its Irish parishioners, but half its bishops!

And those bishops & clergy blasted in the Cloyne Report may have to physically face the wrath of the RC populace.....

Bring it on!

It doesn't stop there, Ireland is now closing it's Vatican Embassy..

["While the Embassy to the Holy See is one of Ireland’s oldest missions, it yields no economic return," Mr Gilmore continued.]
