Chinese Fighter Jets intercept U.S. Spy Plane
The incident involved two SU-27 fighter planes from China's People's Liberation Army and a U.S. U2 reconnaissance aircraft. The U.S. spy plane was reportedly flying along the Taiwan Strait in order to collect information on the Chinese mainland.
A Chinese fighter then crossed the middle of the Taiwan Strait, which is widely considered to be the boundary between Taiwan's airspace and that of China. "The intruder did not turn back until two F-16 fighters of (the) Taiwan Air Force scrambled to intercept it," it said, citing an unnamed military source.

Re: Chinese Fighter Jets intercept U.S. Spy Plane
The incident took place in late June when two SU-27 fighter planes of China's People's Liberation Army tried to drive away a US U2 reconnaissance aircraft, the News said.

The US plane was reportedly flying along the Taiwan Strait to collect information about the Chinese mainland.

One of the Chinese fighters crossed the middle of the Taiwan Strait, widely considered to be the boundary between Taiwan's airspace and that of the mainland, the News said.

"The intruder did not turn back until two F-16 fighters of (the) Taiwan Air Force scrambled to intercept it," it said, citing an unnamed military source.

I thought U2s flew much higher than fighters are capable of flying when on a spy run?

Su-27 Service ceiling: 18,500 m (62,523 ft)

Lockheed U-2 Service ceiling: 70,000+ ft

A U-2 is stationed in Cyprus in March 2011 to help in the enforcement of the no-fly zone over Libya,[30] and a U-2 stationed at Osan Air Base in South Korea was used to provide imagery of the Japanese nuclear reactor damaged by the 11 March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.[31]
