We have a river like that here too. The treated waste water from several cities go into it but people still swim in it any way.

I did too back when I was a kid. One time a got a very small scratch while swimming, the resulting infection was out of this world.

On average, people produce 1 ounce of fecal matter, or 'poop,' for each 12 pounds of body weight, so it depends on your weight.
If we assume the average person weighs 150 pounds, that's about 12 oz (1.5 ilbs or a little under a kilogram)

8.4 million new yorkers produce about 12 million pounds
of shit every day.
That's 360 million pounds each month.
And per year 2 million tons of shit.

Green algae to continue spread off China’s east coastline



A break-out of algae bloom, or “green tide,” has spread nearly 20,000 square km in waters off China’s east coastline, sources with the country’s maritime authorities said Sunday.

An algal bloom is a rapid increase or accumulation in the population of algae (typically microscopic) in an aquatic system. Algal blooms may occur in freshwater as well as marine environments. Typically, only one or a small number of phytoplankton species are involved, and some blooms may be recognized by discoloration of the water resulting from the high density of pigmented cells. Although there is no officially recognized threshold level, algae can be considered to be blooming at concentrations of hundreds to thousands of cells per milliliter, depending on the severity. Algal bloom concentrations may reach millions of cells per milliliter. Algal blooms are often green, but they can also be other colors such as yellow-brown or red, depending on the species of algae.

Bright green blooms are a result of cyanobacteria (colloquially known as blue-green algae) such as Microcystis. Blooms may also consist of macroalgal (non-phytoplanktonic) species. These blooms are recognizable by large blades of algae that may wash up onto the shoreline.

Hmm... could be wrong but um... wasn't plagues in the past been caused by scenarios like this?

Unfortunately a few rivers here in Ohio is deemed unsafe to swim/drink/play in due to this as well.

I spent a fair amount of time in Manhattan years ago. I was amazed when the garbage collectors went on strike. The amount of garbage that built up on the sidewalks and in the streets was astounding. A lot of it had to have ended up in the river.

This past winter during the huge snowstorm we had, garbage wasn't picked up for a couple of weeks. Outside of
multimillion dollar apartments was garbage piled up three and four stories and rats running around.

I was driving on the Henry Hudson Parkway this morning and at 125th Street there was a horrible sewer smell. Then I remembered what happened last week with the sewer plant. Ewwwww.
