‘Right Out of Atlas Shrugged’: Hear an Exasperated Alabama Businessman Tell the Feds – ‘I’m Just Quitting’
Ronnie Bryant was vastly outnumbered.

Leaning against a wall during a recent Birmingham, Alabama, public hearing, Bryant listened to an overflow crowd pepper federal officials with concerns about businesses polluting the drinking water and causing cases of cancer.

After two hours, Bryant—a coal mine owner from Jasper—had heard enough and, in a moment being described as “right out of Atlas Shrugged,” took his turn at the microphone

Re: ‘Right Out of Atlas Shrugged’: Hear an Exasperated Alabama Businessman Tell the Feds – ‘I’m Just Quitting’
I considered opening up a pooper scooper biz to employ one of my own children, and hopefully a couple of others. The service is not offered in my city and I personally know several people who would have used it.
After looking into how and where I could dispose of the waste, I decided it just wasn't worth it. Same as this guy here. I found that I would violate several ordinances even if I placed it on a friends' 550 acre property. This is what we are coming to.

Yes, it says in the article that he has remained resolute in his position. His is not going to open another coal mine in Alabama.

Obama clearly stated numerous times during the campaign that he would shut down Coal so I don't know why this is a surprse to anyway.

As someone whose life has been negatively affected by coal, I say GOOD. I hope all the crooked coalmen all over the country quit, too.

These types of industries have been polluting and subsequently destroying communities for years.

Ever been to a coal mining town? Not a pretty site, in any country.

And in the meantime mortgages aren't being paid and kids go hungry. We have an enormous natural resource of coal in this country and to ignore it is foolish. Invest and research in cleaner coal, fine, ignoring the resource in labor and wages is stupid especially in the current times.

Wow what a twat this guy is, if he was sooo concerned about the people in his community like he says why would he not take that money he would invest in the mine and invest it somewhere else, start up another company, invest in a green energy initiative that would bring jobs to the area.
The guy is a cry baby oh boo hoo my free ride of easy money is going away i have to put in effort and the money isnt as good I know ill lie about giving a shit about the people who work for me and maybe people will give me sympathy and i can go back to getting my free ride on the gravy train. As long as i dont have to do anything constructive to fix the predicament myself or heaven forbid invest in something that requires work.

Is there a middle ground? Maybe the people who need jobs now can work for the coal industry and transfer to the "other" industry as it comes into practical use?

What the U.S. Really needs now is leaders who actually care about the people, all people, in other words, Love.

Re: ‘Right Out of Atlas Shrugged’: Hear an Exasperated Alabama Businessman Tell the Feds – ‘I’m Just Quitting’
The purpose of posting this was to point out how regulations are affecting business owners. Yes, this is a coal business and there are considerations into how it affects the environment, however, ALL business owners have NUMEROUS regulations they have to follow, in addition to permits, licensing fees, taxes on equipment, etc. that are preventing them from running their businesses. That is what I wanted to discuss.
Example: Each year I have to physically go down to the courthouse and remind them that I do not own any equipment other than an old computer and a desk and phone. If I do not do this, they will just make up equipment that I MIGHT own out of thin air and commit me to pay taxes on it.
And don't even get me started on hiring employees. I don't have any anymore and will not be hiring any going forward.
Did you know that when you apply for a job, the employer has to keep your file for at least 1 year? Even, and especially if you were not hired.
We need to make it EASIER for business to succeed and employ people, not harder.

Yeah because not having regulations is an awesome idea right kind of like how they rolled back all that awful regulation stuff that was crippling the poor finance industry. What a great deal that was it made everything sooo much better when they got rid of the regulation there didnt it.

It sounds good to slam coal and oil because they are not the "clean technologies" like wind or solar. However, before throwing coal and oil out the window you better determine the real cost of power using solar and wind. Creating solar panels is not clean or inexpensive and wind turbines are causing several environmental and human problems. I have solar panels and know how expensive it is to create one hour of electricity. I could not afford to purchase enough solar panel just to meet my electric needs much less contribute to the community. Oil and coal are here for many decades to come unless there is a tremendous breakthrough in technology.

Because he is a coal miner not a gubmint "green energy" fake industry.

Do you have any idea how much work and planning goes into opening and operating a mine? Do you think anyone off the street can do this? Do you think capital investment is easy to come by? Do you understand that someone somewhere has to actually produce something so people like you can have a computer?
