WTRF reports that the unmanned aircraft launched from Akron, Ohio, on Wednesday, and was scheduled to hover over Eastern Central Ohio while doing some communications tests for the Army.

Re: Military Blimp goes down
In the news picture of the crashed blimp it looks like the blimp has solar cells all along it's top ... so it was probably an experimental blimp that was "mostly" solar powered so that it could remain airborn for extended periods of time.

Neat concept for a communications platform. Put up an unmanned blimp that can remain on scene for several days as a relay platform (ala "repeater system" like hams use) in a relatively static location.

Over the years various aircraft have been utilized in that capacity, both for the military and in civilian life, but a blimp makes much more sense if they can iron out the problems.

Re: Military Blimp goes down
FWIW: The Navy is AGAIN back in the blimp flying business, which many people don't realize.

The Navy, (and DEA/DHS/Coast Guard?), now has several blimps that they utilize for radar picket duty mostly in the Carribean area looking for drug runners/smugglers (though I have personally seen a couple of the Navy blimps as far north Maryland's Eastern Shore).

Those Navy blimps are clones of the Goodyear Blimps (Goodyear built them) and are manned blimps. (there are also a few "teathered" blimp type balloons - ala like in WW1 - that also carry radar equipment to elevations of several thousand feet for watching certain approaches to the US)

Re: Military Blimp goes down
It's that sonofabitch Dick Dastardly and Muttley that did it. Those guys are always attacking blimps and pigeons.
