I looked it up one time long ago, trying to figure out where the Romans got their Lions for feeding Christians too from, and earlier stuff, like if the lions in the pit in the story of Joseph we're from the area or imported for the purpose of living in pits so the people of that place and time could throw stuff and people down to them. |

Lions were present in the Negev desert in the bible lands up to the time of the crusades around 1100 AD. Remember that the Assyrians, Greeks, Romans, and Middle Ages European Kingdoms used lions in symbols and many kings kept them in their possession. The Assyrian Kings ran their own 'canned hunts' releasing captive animals into enclosed parks for slaughter by hunters riding on chariots. |
