Why are there lions in the Bible ?
Why are there lions in the Bible ?

Lions are mostly found in Southern Africa, and the Bible was recorded in the Middle East.

So how does the Bible know about these faraway countries that nobody had visited yet ?

Conspiracy ?

Genesis 49:9

You are a lion’s cub, Judah; you return from the prey, my son. Like a lion he crouches and lies down, like a lioness—who dares to rouse him?

Numbers 24:9
Like a lion they crouch and lie down, like a lioness—who dares to rouse them? “May those who bless you be blessed and those who curse you be cursed!”

Judges 14:5
Samson went down to Timnah together with his father and mother. As they approached the vineyards of Timnah, suddenly a young lion came roaring toward him.

1 Kings 7:36
He engraved cherubim, lions and palm trees on the surfaces of the supports and on the panels, in every available space, with wreaths all around

There were lions in Egypt.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 300884

I think they were a species that went extinct.

The Barbary Lion was the largest lion of the subspecies. They possessed a large black mane that extended to the underbelly and groin. Their mane also extended longer along its back and over its shoulders. The Barbary lions lived in the Atlas Mountains of Northern Africa, from Morocco to Egypt. They were more heavily built than today's lions weighing over 500 lbs and reaching 9-11 feet in length. Barbary Lions have been officially declared extinct in the wild.

It says on the Internet that there are still some in zoos, but that they went extinct in the wild.

Re: Why are there lions in the Bible ?
there used to be lions throughout that region. along with many other types of animals that are found in abundance to the east and to the southwest.

the inhabitants massacred nearly all animal life and turned the place into a desert.

what it looks like today is not what it looked like 3000 years ago.

This thread is a set up.

The original poster wants desperately to believe that the original people of the Bible were black Africans. And he thinks lions could only have ever lived in Africa.

Blacks are always trying to claim something is theirs (inventions, civilizations, histories, etc.), but when you look at the real data and evidence, you quickly find out that they never did anything!

No, I don't ! The original people of the Bible were non-Arabic Middle Easterners, including Jews, but also others like Aramaics.

Is there anything in the Bible that speaks of cold or freezing weather, having to wear warm clothes, having to come in from the cold, chariots or horses slipping on ice or snow, poor people shivering with cold, someone being left out in the cold, walking home in the cold. Not that I've ever noticed.
Obviously it was a warm climate year around for the people portrayed in the Bible.

You people are stupid. The bible is ALL AFRICAN except for the New Testament which is completely bogus.

There is no "middle east". ALL of that is Africa! Saudi Arabia is Africa. Whites invaded for the past 2000 years and now the place is mixed. Blacks don't steal other peoples' culture. They are the innovators of culture. This is just sad.

Also, long ago the Sahara was fertile, wet, and green! It's almost embarrassing reading what white people say here sometimes. You all really need to humble yourselves.

There were lions in Babylon-Daniel and The Lion's Den. Somehow, men had captured them and moved them-maybe lions were found in the Middle East during Biblical Times. Didn't Samson have some dealing with the corpse of a lion? Thought so.

Barbary Lions, one of the largest subspecie of Lion, for instance was actually found soley in the middle east all up until the last Barbary Lion in the wild was killed in 1922. So yes, there SHOULD be lions in the Bible.
Lions have lived across the entire african, european, and even parts of the asian continent since they have existed.

I looked it up one time long ago, trying to figure out where the Romans got their Lions for feeding Christians too from, and earlier stuff, like if the lions in the pit in the story of Joseph we're from the area or imported for the purpose of living in pits so the people of that place and time could throw stuff and people down to them.

Re: Why are there lions in the Bible ?
Lions were present in the Middle East up until 1870 when the last was shot in Turkey. Lions were present in the Negev desert in the bible lands up to the time of the crusades around 1100 AD.

Remember that the Assyrians, Greeks, Romans, and Middle Ages European Kingdoms used lions in symbols and many kings kept them in their possession. The Assyrian Kings ran their own 'canned hunts' releasing captive animals into enclosed parks for slaughter by hunters riding on chariots.
