How many condensators are in a regular house (appliances) gas running through everywhere How many first responders will be handicapped by current technology? Get yourself a pocket watch if you want to be able to plant explosives effectively after tshtf. Seriously though, this will be the most severe doom. Everything goes at once, if you are not in your desired place in advance, it will be VERY hard to get there. This would certainly be the worst case scenario. no - worst is everything catches on fire... Actually, there would be some electical devices that are not destroyed by the flare. Some by luck, and some will be protected by geography or location. A well grounded steel building will afford some protection, and your electronics could be saved by wrapping them in alternating layers of plastic and copper. Protecting walkie talkies will give you a way to get in touch with other people as long as your batteries hold out. Saving a computer will just be a waste of time unless you keep useful survival info on it. Chances of having internet are about zero. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. Now NASA say's to be ready for a BIG SOLAR STORM Even in a worse case, not everything would shut down. Most installations are designed to take lighting hits, this was NOT true of the 1859 storm where long lines hung in the air without so much as a fuse. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1459247Fiber cables are unaffected. well shielded devices (laptops) are unaffected. lightning hardened installations (cell towers) are unaffected. The power grid might go out, because these storms induce large DC currents into the power grid and this wrecks the transformers. This happened in Canada in 1989. Now NASA say's to be ready for a BIG SOLAR STORM NASA is now predicting that the Sun may generate unprecedented solar storms for a lengthy period in 2012-13. We cannot accurately predict Earth's normal weather a week in advance, and it is by no means clear how NASA can do this with respect unprecedented weather on the Sun years in advance. They are saying that we are more dependent on vulnerable computer technology now. But we had similar dependencies in 2001 and 1990 when previous 11-year solar cycles hit. What is different about the current cycle? Some might suggest that NASA is acting as if it has some extra information that is not currently stated. [link to www.farsight.org] |

Food supplies will be exhausted in hours after that everyone will turn on each other for food and water, that is the problem with having millions of neighbors crowded into one location... |

Entire telegraph facilities were set ablaze owed to the immense currents induced by troves of ultra high energy particles streaming through our atmosphere." Quoting: Wash[link to space.about.com] So remember, the sun like so many other things goes through cycles. We just went through a relitivly calm period for the sun and now we are climbing towards the more active time. Just like in Hurricane season, not every year will bring a Katrina but every year will bring some BIG DAMAGING storms. My point is that we could experience more than 1 big solar storm, possibly enough to wipe out technology and keep it down for years. Sure they say the climax will be sometime in 2012, but leading up to it there will be storms as well so be prepared now not in 12 months. That's what they said about the last solar storm... nothing happened then. Why should it this time. They are just saying it "could" again... I love physics. It bonds us eternally, it's what makes our computers work, it's what's in my morning cup of coffee, it's the thing that keeps the universe from vanishing due to lack of belief... |
