Can you imagine everything around you suddenly shuts down?

Every electrical device broken, even your watch.

This would certainly be the worst case scenario.

Actually that would be a best case scenario and just what this society needs, a forced situation and an opportunity to be able to breakaway from all our idiotic consuming addictions.

screw computers going out, imagine that all that wiring in the home, wire fences and other conductors, such as metal flashings and roof components or even metal screens and meshes accumulate enough charge to ignite. THe fires resulting could be massive and unfightable with power out..

So some telegraph offices cought fire, and some operators back then got burned.

How many condensators are in a regular house (appliances)
gas running through everywhere
How many first responders will be handicapped by current technology?
Get yourself a pocket watch if you want to be able to plant explosives effectively after tshtf.
Seriously though, this will be the most severe doom.
Everything goes at once,
if you are not in your desired place in advance, it will be VERY hard to get there. (And i mean continent for some of us) Because i read a thread on here confirming Russian cientists looking for relation to sun and EQ events.

Actually, there would be some electical devices that are not destroyed by the flare. Some by luck, and some will be protected by geography or location. A well grounded steel building will afford some protection, and your electronics could be saved by wrapping them in alternating layers of plastic and copper. Protecting walkie talkies will give you a way to get in touch with other people as long as your batteries hold out. Saving a computer will just be a waste of time unless you keep useful survival info on it. Chances of having internet are about zero.
Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

Even in a worse case, not everything would shut down. Most installations are designed to take lighting hits, this was NOT true of the 1859 storm where long lines hung in the air without so much as a fuse.

Fiber cables are unaffected. well shielded devices (laptops) are unaffected. lightning hardened installations (cell towers) are unaffected.

The power grid might go out, because these storms induce large DC currents into the power grid and this wrecks the transformers. This happened in Canada in 1989.

Re: 1859 solar storm was enough to wipe out today's technlogy. Now NASA say's to be ready for a BIG SOLAR STORM
NASA is now predicting that the Sun may generate unprecedented solar storms for a lengthy period in 2012-13. We cannot accurately predict Earth's normal weather a week in advance, and it is by no means clear how NASA can do this with respect unprecedented weather on the Sun years in advance. They are saying that we are more dependent on vulnerable computer technology now. But we had similar dependencies in 2001 and 1990 when previous 11-year solar cycles hit. What is different about the current cycle? Some might suggest that NASA is acting as if it has some extra information that is not currently stated.

If you are in a city you will not be able to exit as cars, buses, trains, planes will not work, also there will be no water as municipal water will shut down. Food supplies will be exhausted in hours after that everyone will turn on each other for food and water, that is the problem with having millions of neighbors crowded into one location...

"The last time the Sun entered a well below average solar minimum, in 1859, it was ushered in by a giant solar storm. How big? Entire telegraph facilities were set ablaze owed to the immense currents induced by troves of ultra high energy particles streaming through our atmosphere."

[link to space.about.com]

So remember, the sun like so many other things goes through cycles. We just went through a relitivly calm period for the sun and now we are climbing towards the more active time. Just like in Hurricane season, not every year will bring a Katrina but every year will bring some BIG DAMAGING storms. My point is that we could experience more than 1 big solar storm, possibly enough to wipe out technology and keep it down for years. Sure they say the climax will be sometime in 2012, but leading up to it there will be storms as well so be prepared now not in 12 months.
 Quoting: Wash

That's what they said about the last solar storm... nothing happened then. Why should it this time. They are just saying it "could" again...

Nerves can generate induced currents from rapidly varying magnetic fields just like wires... the issues with electronic circuits in high field magnets come from their ferromagnetic elements, but electronic circuitry does work in strong magnetic fields provided it is designed to minimize ferromagnetic attraction to the magnet itself.
