Actually that would be a best case scenario and just what this society needs, a forced situation and an opportunity to be able to breakaway from all our idiotic consuming addictions.

screw computers going out, imagine that all that wiring in the home, wire fences and other conductors, such as metal flashings and roof components or even metal screens and meshes accumulate enough charge to ignite. THe fires resulting could be massive and unfightable with power out..

I'm not sure this would happen...

I think the human nervous system would be cooked in such a scenario as well.

Who cares about thos sattelites anyway,
not so many airplanes would be nice, imagine what that would do for meditation(not that i practice it).
But i always think it is a shame for my meditating fellow humans out there.

I dream of the day when I don't have to hear the most annoying sound of a sea of cars and trucks, horns, idiots with their noisy motorcycles, gardeners with their blowers, moronic top gun douches flying their military toys overhead and numerous other noise pollutions of this world.

Even in a worse case, not everything would shut down. Most installations are designed to take lighting hits, this was NOT true of the 1859 storm where long lines hung in the air without so much as a fuse.

Fiber cables are unaffected. well shielded devices (laptops) are unaffected. lightning hardened installations (cell towers) are unaffected.

The power grid might go out, because these storms induce large DC currents into the power grid and this wrecks the transformers. This happened in Canada in 1989.

So remember, the sun like so many other things goes through cycles. We just went through a relitivly calm period for the sun and now we are climbing towards the more active time. Just like in Hurricane season, not every year will bring a Katrina but every year will bring some BIG DAMAGING storms. My point is that we could experience more than 1 big solar storm, possibly enough to wipe out technology and keep it down for years. Sure they say the climax will be sometime in 2012, but leading up to it there will be storms as well so be prepared now not in 12 months.

That's why I have a pack ready to go with everything I need in my trunk. I will also be bringing my bike to work Thursday and Friday.

What people forget is that the brain is an electrical appliance! There is electricity coursing through the cells of your body right now.
If a storm were strong enough to wipe out equiptment in space designed by NASA engineers ...what will it do to our brains?

Nothing will happen to your brains unless you have copper or other wiring in it. One doesnt induce a current in a brain cell, just in wiring.
That's why they can stuff you into an mri scanner but not your computer
