As an older woman living alone - with a serious, big dog, even I am as cautious and aware as possible. A phone call like that? That sounds like someone casing the place. Whether they are governmental or thugs, they want to know where assets and resources can be acquired.

Get her caller ID. If I don't recognize the number, they can always leave a voicemail.
Have plans in place - that's obvious.
Teach her, for God's sakes, how to be careful and aware.
No, "they" would not let her take her little dogs.

P.P.S. To the other Coloradan. I would never put myself of a list of people having "empty" space. Anyway, I don't have "empty" space; and any "unoccupied" corner I might have at such a time has already been claimed by specific individuals. Did you try to find out what the newspaper bit was about?

HER head is clear as a bell ... she even acts and talks much younger then she is ,... she is the sweetest most loving person I know . NOW I am growing more concerned !

Regarding anyone of any age in a gated community: Unsavory types might pretty easily gain access under the guise of repairs or delivery. Did you schedule a repairman - or did he just show up at your door. If that happened, would you just let him in - after all, you live in a "secure" community,right?

i live 40 minutes south of that plant and worry myself about it and what would happen if that had a melt down. take care op of you and your family.

Ok you're freaking me out now. In another thread you were talking about the streaky blue light in the sky I saw as well, and now this... My mom lives near there and grew up in BH, the next town over. Now I'm a bit worried for her, considering I don't think that area will be safe in the coming years. I've been trying to get her to move, but she doesn't want to.

Sounds like they are casing your mother's home so to speak. She should be wary of strangers. If she answered the questions and wasn't suspicious than it sounds like its time she had assistance.
My mom is 79 and is quite paranoid about calls like these and will not talk to these people.

yes maybe its cause she is only 9 miles from COOK nuclear plant ... maybe the state has ( or is now trying to come up with ) some sort of evacuation plan ? !!

OP, I am 62 - the Coloradan with the big dog. One of my good friends is 82. Many of us old geezers have perfectly clear minds, and varying levels of physical functioning. However, for all the boomer-bashing that goes on, those of my generation can be frighteningly naive, trustful and innocent. I speak of normal people, not the people who have contributed to today's problems (the uber-wealthy and uber-powerful); that category took advantage of all of us then as now. But, the normal boomers lived in a time when many folks didn't lock their doors, slept with floor level windows open all night, let their kids roam or play outside in the evening. Dogs ran unleashed and cats weren't declawed. You didn't have to read four signs along the street to figure out if you could And amazingly, most everyone survived. It was a time when some stranger at your door wanted to sell you something or needed a little help, but unlikely had your harm in his mind. The world hadn't exploded with instant communications, so folks didn't even know about the corruption at high levels unless it made the local or state newspaper - and much never did. I am still finding out about corruption in high places that happened when I was in the pre-Internet period of life.

So, your mom not questioning is not surprising to me. I know many like that. They think I am overly cautious, always look for boogeymen who aren't there. It is an educational process.

i trust and respect my elders I think they come from a time when people were more helpful towards each other . my Mom is just a good heart . i wish she lived with me sigh.

The synchronicity is this thread is interesting. I lived in SB, IN most of my life and was there a couple months ago to visit. For awhile I've had the feeling that would be my last visit there, in that sometime soon the north and south would be cut off from each other, or at least communications would go down due to some attack or disaster. I hope I'm wrong because almost everyone I love lives in that area!

wow that is a trip my Mom doesn't want to leave either she loves the area !

I guess I can understand... being older and just wanting to live the rest of your days in peace. I feel responsible to do my part to make that happen and am willing to fight for it... It just I've been feeling uneasy about the place in the future and the only explanation is the vicinity of Lake Michigan & Chicago.
