El Hierro Volcano Kickstarting...Earthquake Swarm.
You have heard about the massive seismic swarm in the Canary Islands in the past week. Of the 1100 of these micro-quakes, at least 700 of them have been under El Hierro. The scientists say that it is too early to tell what will happen and that there are no other signs that an eruption is imminent. Most of these quakes are shallow. This sounds to me like there is a serious build up of pressure, but I am not expert, it just seems logical that this thing is getting ready to blow. With all the recent volcano eruptions, you can't rule it out.

An earthquake swarm occurred at El Hierro volcano in July 2011 with 720 earthquakes measured in a week. The earthquakes were measured between magnitude 1-3, and most were at a depth of 5-15 km. The swarm occurred at El Golfo in the northwest of the island at the location of a landslide that created a 100 metre high tsunami about 50,000 years ago.

If you look at the chart of earthquakes on the following link at the top of the page, you can see it looks like all the quakes are moving towards and focusing on a center area.

This could be a hell of a ride if this one goes.

You're welcome. I have been watching this situation also and am glad you posted the info. I believe there is a serious possibility of a horrific scenario developing. This should be watched carefully as a heads up could save lives. Good job!!

Although over 200 years have elapsed since the last eruption, El Hierro has the largest number of volcanoes in the Canaries with over 500 open sky cones, another 300 covered by the most recent outflows, and some 70 caves and volcanic galleries, notably the Don Justo cave whose collection of channels surpasses 6km in length.
