What does fasting do to the soul?
Words, and my thoughts, and my wants arnt getting me to know the lord, i have a health condition which will not let me live for very long. I fear that i will die without jesus and perish in hell. I dont know what to do anymore, i am so scared and find it difficult to have that need or want to speak to the lord. I want to fast for him, will this help me in my search for the lord?

Re: What does fasting do to the soul?
I used to fast from time to time, because I thought it was healthful. All it did was mess up my metabolism.

If you want to cut back on food, that's fine.. drink juices, eat plain rice and steamed and raw vegetables.. it will give your digestive system a rest. But I don't personally recommend a complete fast.

Re: What does fasting do to the soul?
Know thyself and you will understand the lord. The blueprint reside in you. If fasting is out of the question because of work, school, or just a busy life in general I suggest meditation. Maybe not the traditional method of eyes closed "Ohm" (of course you can if you chose), but I like to meditate by just taking time to myself eachday to play my harp aka harmonica. It helps center me and I believe that is what you are searching for in these chaotic times.

Re: What does fasting do to the soul?
'god' is within us all. the absence of materials and substances will get us closer to the spirit. fast with cayenne, garlic, lemon juice, .. and a little syrup, none of that HFCS stuff.

i'm definitely no enlightened guru myself, but have AP'd by accident when i was 13. (astral projected). look into transcendental meditation.

I have fasted many times. During a fast the world just seems brighter.

FYI the first 16 days your body is cleansing day 17 on your body heals.

My old laptop crashed along with my bookmarks. I will have to look for a link

Re: What does fasting do to the soul?
It is not what fasting does for the soul, it is what it does to the body. Fasting is for the weakening of the flesh, so that the spirit can be in control. Fasting is about showing your body who is boss rather than being a godless human animal who scurries about fulfilling all of his/her lusts and acting upon every instinct and impulse.

Hunger and thirst are two of the most primal needs, even more so than sex. To deprive your flesh of them weakens the flesh's control over the spirit. It helps you to realize that you are much more than biochemical processes, but a conscious spirit inside of a body, exercising your will over that body. To be a Christian, it allows you to more easily recognize the presence of the Holy Spirit, as when your body is weakened, it loses its power to drown out the truth of God with primal urges and animalistic nature.

here ya go

14. Jesus said to them, "If you fast, you will bring sin upon yourselves, and if you pray, you will be condemned, and if you give to charity, you will harm your spirits.

...

After all, what goes into your mouth will not defile you; rather, it's what comes out of your mouth that will defile you."

And there you have it! That would be why the Gospel of Thomas, from which your quote is taken, is considered to NOT BE a God-breathed and inspired text, but a text of the devil. It is having Jesus directly contradicting himself.

Jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights (Matt. 4:2)
John the Baptist taught his disciples to fast (Mark 2:19)
and the clincher? The LAW! In the Torah the people were commanded by God to fast on the Day of Atonement (Jer. 36:6).

The Gospel of Thomas teaches people to disobey God.

WOW ... never thought about that but makes sense. I know the Gospel of Thomas is a difficult one to swallow, almost like no one could be saved. Thanks

Re: What does fasting do to the soul?
OP you can do nothing for the LORD. All He wants is your love and faithfulness. OP in order to be saved you must beleive in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus died on the cross for your sins. You must than repent of all of your sins and ask God to forgive you. Romans 10:9 and 10. After you are saved repent daily and ask God to forgive you of all your sins that you commited that day. You are already saved but you are asking for forgiveness of your sins that you have committed that day. You don't have to worry about naming them. Just be truthful with the Lord and talk to him. There is nothing to be afraid of. Jesus Christ loves you.

Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10: For with the heart man beleiveth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

OP you than need to find you a Christian and be baptized if you are able to. If you are in such bad health don't worry about it. God understands. Good luck to you OP and I will be praying for you. Remember once you confess your sins with your mouth they are no more.

Re: What does fasting do to the soul?
By worrying about whether you are going to hell or not, you're just adding unnecessary stress to a body that is already suffering physically. Patients who have the loving support of friends and family are statistically more likely to survive serious medical complications than those who have no social support.

Instead of worrying about something that can't be verified, concern yourself with what can be. Sound nutrition, exercise, avoiding drugs and tobacco, and a love for the mystery of life are all good ways to improve your health.

You better stay away from this bible. I can tell you right now these are not the words form Jesus. You have been fooled. Get you a King James Version.

Listen, I would explain how fasting works. people will have very strong desire when hungry while this desire is the origin for all others such as greedy and so forth. the purpose of fasting is to agitate this desire and to learn how to put it under control of our mind then you can control other desire. final stage is to establish peace in heart. One must careful with it. When fasting, better be focusing on controlling the desire instead of doing something else so to easy the difficulties, for instance reading and so on, since that will make a substitution of desire instead of pacify it with your mind. if one have developed the capability into one's intuition. one can immediately realize how soul has changed.

^This.

OP, no-one is saved by works. Everybody is a sinner.

Jesus died to save your soul. If you believe that, you will not be sentenced for your sins.

I hope you can find piece in that, and I wish you well!

AC1332912, Please don't be frightened . hugs

I didn't instantly know Christ after becoming a Christian.

It is a beautiful journey and a very personal one.

Because of your poor health I can't recommended you fast.

I have fasted with prayer before and it makes me feel humble before the Lord and my heart more open to the Holy Spirit.

If you want to feel close to Jesus , read the words He left you in the New Testament. Start with the First Book of John.

The more you read; the closer you will feel as Jesus opens your heart to His understanding.

Drawn close to Him and He will draw Himself even closer to you.

May The Holy Spirit comfort and guide you. hf

prayers for you

2013
