Need advice on snub nose revolver for use as concealed handgun
I am of course female and would like to purchase snub nosed revolver for use as a concealed handgun.
I am looking for something light enough to put in a purse, that is relatively accurate
and can at least halt an attacker long enough to get away. I have fired 38 and 9mm revolvers and
semi-automatic handguns so
I am not unfamiliar with the recoil that these have.

I would prefer a Smith and Wesson but would like to hear any advice any other females or males may have on the subject.

For the price Ruger SP101 357 is a good buy. If you have more money available, get Smith Wesson J Frame body guard series. Get 357, you can alway shoot 38 special out of them, but you get the choice to shoot the magnum rounds if you need.

A concealed hand gun requires a lot of permits, backround checks and the like.
Why not just open carry...it's 100% legal as long as your gun is legal.

There is a number of models of the J frame you indicated on the S&W website. Is anyone better than the others or is it just a matter of esthetics?

Rugar LCR is a great gun too. A lot of Police officers use this as a back up gun or for conceal carry.

I recommend the S&W with the shrouded hammer, that is the bodyguard series, I think, and what another poster mentioned.

S&W also make or used to make the Ladysmith, which was a lighter snub nose .38 but I don't think it had a shrouded hammer.

The Dark Side of Smith & Wesson

By Chuck Hawks

AUTHOR'S PREFACE

I've never had any particular desire to do an article about the dark side of Smith & Wesson, but it's time someone in the outdoor media called a spade a spade, so to speak, rather than sugar-coat it as a "manual digging implement." I'm sure that I will be accused of all sorts of bias after speaking out in this article, but the fact is that I have no personal motive, nor do I stand to profit in any way, from an S&W hit piece. Quite the contrary, as I will undoubtedly alienate some readers and a large potential advertiser.

Frankly, I don't like to write negative reviews, which is why I have usually declined to review Smith & Wesson products. However, too many readers have written asking why I haven't reviewed S&W firearms, or asking if I recommend various S&W models. Guns and Shooting Online readers expect, and deserve, the truth--or at least an honest opinion. So here goes . . ..

Re: Need advice on snub nose revolver for use as concealed handgun
since a .38 snubby is mostly a GTH (go to hell) firearm (a last resort firearm), you want to make sure you get one that is going to be reliable 100% of the time. and since if you ever do need to use it, you will most likely be within 50ft of your assailant, I would load it a little on the hot side and use lead wad cutter target rounds with the slug inverted so the hollow nose is forward. past 50ft they're about as accurate as throwing rocks but the little fuggers tumble like hell and the gods help whoever gets in front of that round in that magic 50ft. I carried a Colt detectives' special with those loads when I was in Kuwait. only thing I ever shot with it was some melons but they blowed up real good.

You can carry 14rds at the same weight as those revolvers. The +p 380 is very nice. I have the Colt Government Pocketlite model, very accurate.

Re: Need advice on snub nose revolver for use as concealed handgun
Why not consider something like a Glock G26? The ammo capacity, reliability, ease of maintenance, and corrosion resistance are all far superior to any revolver. They're plenty easy to handle, accurate, and the 9mm caliber is plenty powerful for personal defense.

Also, have you considered belt carry? Most of the instructors out there are recommending that women not purse carry, due to the relative inaccessability of the weapon, and the risk of losing it if the purse is lost or stolen.

Just my two cents' worth, though. Enjoy your search!
