Treyfish (OP) User ID: 1261829 United States 08/13/2011 09:57 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | UN bid coincides with Lebanon presidency (updated) 13/08/2011 21:35 RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- The leadership in Ramallah chose to submit their bid for statehood in September to coincide with Lebanon's presidency of the UN Security Council, the Palestinian Authority foreign minister said Saturday. "We chose to submit it in September because the Lebanese envoy will be president of the Security Council and plays a pivotal role," Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Malki said. The minister told reporters at his office in Ramallah that President Mahmoud Abbas would submit the bid personally, adding that he would visit Lebanon on Tuesday to discuss the campaign. Al-Malki said the bid would be handed to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who would refer it to Lebanon in its capacity as president of the UN Security Council. According to UN protocol, the bid should be submitted 35 days before the council's session, Al-Malki said. However, there have been exceptions to this rule: South Sudan submitted its bid for independence just two days before it was recognized by the UN. The US is openly opposed to the campaign and could request the bid be delayed. But Al-Malki said the decision to delay it would ultimately lie with Lebanon, adding that "we have enough member states to face the US request [to delay the vote]." more at link [link to www.maannews.net] |
Treyfish (OP) User ID: 1261829 United States 08/13/2011 10:01 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Saturday, 13 August 2011 A date has been set for Palestinians to present their unilateral bid for membership of the United Nations, despite fears the move could lead to fresh conflict between Israel and the Palestinians and destabilize the whole region. Palestinians will bid for UN statehood on September 20 and are adamant to press on with this “historic initiative,” Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Al Malki told AFP on Saturday, outlining details of the bid. “Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas will personally present the request to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon...at the opening of the sixty-sixth session,” on September 20, Mr. Malki said. He added that President Abbas “will insist on this historic initiative and Ban Ki-moon will present the request to the Security Council.” According to Mr. Malki, the date was set for September because Lebanon, which will hold the presidency of the Security Council, would be in a strong position to push the bid forward. “Lebanon will hold the presidency of the Security Council in September and this will help us because the President of the council has special prerogatives, which is crucial,” Mr. Malki added. But earlier this year, a senior Israeli politician said that the bid could spark new clashes. “The possibility of a unilateral declaration, it could bring Palestinians out on to the streets for protests and, God forbid, it could lead to a conflict,” Shaul Mofaz, a former defense minister who is an MP for the opposition Kadima party told AFP in June. “Given the great changes in the region, it is very difficult to predict what will happen,” Mr. Mofaz said. “In this situation, an Israeli-Palestinian conflict could lead to a harsh reality.”Direct peace talks between the two sides had ground to a halt in September last year when Israel failed to renew a partial freeze on settlement construction in the occupied West Bank. Since then, the Palestinians have refused to return to talks as long as Israel builds on land they want for a future state. The UN bid is seen by many as a strategic, diplomatic move to secure recognition of a Palestinian state along the borders that existed before the 1967 Six-Day War, covering the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including east Jerusalem. Last month, envoys from the Middle East diplomatic Quartet met in Washington in one of the final attempts to avoid a major confrontation at the United Nations between the Israelis... The U.S. announced the suspension after Hamas said it would be auditing nonprofit humanitarian organizations in Gaza and demand they submit future project plans and the names of their employees. Last Sunday, the offices of an American nonprofit in Gaza, the International Medical Corps, were raided and shut down after failing to turn over documents demanded by officials. American assistance is critical to the population of Gaza, and on Friday, the U.S. administration said it would suspend $100 million in annual assistance to 17 American humanitarian organizations there after Hamas officials in Gaza failed to allow the International Medical Corps office to reopen. Treyfish (OP) User ID: 1261829 United States 08/13/2011 10:50 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Israel preparing for Palestinian statehood rallies 14 August 2011, Sunday Israeli police and army are importing horses, water cannons, tear gas launchers and a nauseating noise machine to avoid casualties among Palestinians if they go ahead with plans to protest in the West Bank during a bid for UN endorsement of Palestinian statehood next month, officials have said. The feverish preparations reflect painful lessons from Israel’s botched and bloody confrontation with thousands of Palestinians storming across the Syrian border in May, when ill-equipped Israeli soldiers shot more than a dozen protesters dead. Israel absorbed stiff international criticism for the bloodshed, and officials admitted later that the military was caught unprepared and did not have proper crowd control means. Palestinians are planning mass demonstrations across the West Bank and abroad to coincide with the September UN General Assembly session, which the Palestinians hope will give official endorsement for their state. The statehood initiative reflects frustration with long stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations. Palestinian authorities have their own plans to keep the protests peaceful and avoid confrontations with Israelis, but local history has shown that events can quickly spiral out of control....
