In the mid-60's, when I was in high school, there were cigarette machines at all gas stations. Of course the cigs were MUCH more expensive from the machines, but there was no one checking ID's either.

By the way, a pack from the machine was 25 cents, and it came with a book of matches.

Went to the Cig store yesterday, a carton was $48.99. It's gone up about $10.00 just this year, in increments of course so that each time you go it's a little bit more expensive. Individual packs are $6.89 in the Safeway store (not that I EVER buy them there!!)

THANKS, OP, for catching this and letting us know. Maybe we should try to include a couple of cartons of cigs in our "preps" - could be as valuable as gold!!

Re: Under the radar - ANOTHER TOBACCO TAX INCREASE
you know, there is a loophole to get cigs though the mail still, its called the "certain age-verfied individuals" loophole.

"Shipments sent under the "certain age-verified individuals" exception must be infrequent (no more than 10 shipments in any 30-day period) and weigh 10 ounces or less; however, no special weight limits apply to shipments entirely within Alaska and Hawaii.
Cigarettes and smokeless tobacco are prohibited in both inbound and outbound"

Know someone in the south and you should be able to get cheap ass cigs. Based on the weight limit it appears you could get about 6 1/2 cartons a month.

Here wego again. A bill is in the Senate with major increases in the taxes on tobacco products.

One part of it is raising the tax on pipe (actually cigarette) tobacco from $2.83 per pound to just short of $50 dollars.

Cigarettes are going up too. From $50.33 to $100.50

(1) PIPE TOBACCO (thick cut cigarette tobacco labeled as "pipe" tobacco to circumvent cigarette tax)- Section 5701(f) of the IRS Code of 1986 is amended by striking ‘$2.8311 cents’ and inserting ‘$49.55’.

We're sincerely sorry your daddy beat you when he was drunk. It would do wonders for your credibility if you tried to put together a proper paragraph before lumping everyone who enjoys alcohol into one category. Watching TV harms your eyes. Shall we have a tax on television and video games?

Corn Syrup causes obesity -- shall we have a tax on all products containing corn syrup?

Salt causes blood pressure to rise -- shall we have a tax on all products containing salt?

You, sir, have no idea what Freedom entails. You think it's okay to tax everyone else, because that's works out to less contributions to society for you to pay.

If there is a social responsibility to pay for the education of disabled people, then it's a responsibility for everyone -- not just smokers.

All three of those things you listed, when used/taken in moderation, are neither harmful, nor do they kill you. Smoking cigarettes, even in moderation, causes lung cancer. Nice attempt at comparison, but it really doesn't work.

Wow, you really are ignorant.

People smoke cigs without ever getting lung cancer.

Furthermore, it has been shown that the polonium used in the crop fertilizers is actually what causes the lung cancer. So it's not really tobacco, it's what the tobacco is grown in.

Why do you feel the need to be my daddy?

I would love for you to link me to one peer-reviewed scientific study that proves the only reason cigarettes cause lung cancer is "polonium used in the crop fertilizers". You can't do it. Sorry, but no matter how long you plug your fingers in your ears saying "la-la-la I can't hear you", it doesn't change that inhaling cigarette smoke is extremely effective at causing lung cancer.

Polonium is drawn up into the plant from the fertilizers used. Polonium is the one substance in tobacco smoke which is known to cause cancer in, by, and of itself.

If you spent even 15 minutes on Google, you'd know this already -- rather than bickering with me about it. It's very easy to find out.

The fact is, as I pointed out earlier, you want this tax because it means less for you to pay. And I contend that I have the same responsibility to pay for educating disabled people as you do. So no amount of science is going to change the fact that you want smokers to pay for a project that you should be paying for as well.

No do know that smoking doesn't always cause lung cancer, even in heavy smokers, right? What about the fact that most people who get lung cancer are not even smokers? I think that should be considered.
I think he was trying to say that many things kill people, sometimes in greater numbers than cigarettes and are not taxed to this degree. Fast food, soda, meds, etc. Do a google search for statistics about cancer in people who have never been smokers.

Re: Under the radar - ANOTHER TOBACCO TAX INCREASE
Polonium -210 is the only component of cigarette smoke that has produced cancer by itself in laboratory animals by inhalation - tumors appeared already at a polonium level five times lower than those of a normal heavy smoker.

Lung cancer rates among men kept climbing from a rarity in 1930 (4/100,000 per year) to the No. 1 cancer killer in 1980 (72/100,000) in spite of an almost 20 percent reduction in smoking. But during the same period, the level of polonium -210 in American tobacco had tripled. This coincided with the increase in the use of phosphate fertilizers by tobacco growers - calcium phosphate ore accumulates uranium and slowly releases radon gas.

Ok, so even if polonium is the problem - it's in cigarettes. They are still killing you. So all the better to tax them. Or get polonium banned from fertilizers. Option A is easier in my book.

We have signed a treaty! They can argue all they want in Congress and we can yell until hoarse but until we tell the UN to fuck off this bullshit will continue until the ultimate end goal.

They want to eliminate tobacco and make it a thing of the past.

I don't think this is a good thing. Smoking has a lot of benefits to me and worth the bother. It won't kill me or shorten my life. I never have health issues and 2 packs a day since 1980 keeps me away from alcohol and my weight to an ideal level. So yea, I feel personally threatened by tobacco control fanatics. Their smoke free lifestyle would turn me into a fat old drunk if imposed on me.

Maybe that's just me, but I count too. Don't kill me off.
