~~~US Government knew about tainted turkey for months
ARVADA - Two people want to know why officials waited almost five months to alert the public about a salmonella outbreak involving ground turkey.
Steve Starzenski and Lynda Black say the delay cost them dearly, when their pet Laney died after eating tainted turkey.
The Centers for Disease Control says 107 people nationwide have gotten sick from eating salmonella contaminated ground turkey. One person in California has died. Cargill voluntarily recalled 36 million pounds of ground turkey on August 3, almost 5 months after the first signs of a salmonella outbreak. It is the third-largest meat recall in history.
FDA + megacorporations = unsafe food
We must have freedom to protect ourselves!
Protest the new regs that are trying to crush local farming.
"A new car built by my company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 mph. The rear differential locks up. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one."
I can imagine this is what took so long to recall the Turkey. They had to run the numbers first to see which would cost more; The lawsuits or the recall.
Here's what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace.
It's simple, we as people are merely a numbers game to the FDA. 36 million pounds of turkey ain't no game and we've had a lot of issues in this country over the last 6 months. With farms disappearing all over the Midwest, you have to imagine how this announcement could have become a much bigger problem. It's all about timing and playing the numbers. 1 death to save 36 million pounds of turkey....it's pure math.
I don't agree with it, but since I had a major reaction to an antibiotic, I've done tons of studies on statistics with things of this nature. FDA plays God in America, because they can.
Re: ~~~US Government knew about tainted turkey for months
From their inception, the FDA and USDA have never had the authority to order a company to recall food or other products. It's always been a "voluntary" practice on the part of the company in question.
It's horribly bad policy to not be able to force an unsafe food product off the shelves, and in this instance, I believe that the gov't should have this authority.
Surprise facility inspections, proper testing, and the ability to shut down contaminated food processing facilities, and recall the food items is vital to the health of US Citizens.
Instead, they go after small farmers, and local producers. It makes no sense at all.
A big part of the problem with poulty being contaminated in this way is factory farming. Thousands of birds kept in cages unable to "graze" cannot get the nutrients they need thus disease spreads.
