Anonymous Coward User ID: 1505523 United States 08/18/2011 07:42 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yep, Mercury is gone. Where it went, I have no idea. Here's the list of 2011 transits for the LASCO C3 imager: [link to sungrazer.nrl.navy.mil] It should have appeared in the LASCO view on Augist 13th, then it should have moved from the left side of the view to the right side, and it should exit the view on August 22nd. Here's an image from today: [link to soho.esac.esa.int] The planet atop the Sun, moving from right to left, is Venus. Mercury isn't there, which means something with significant gravitational force has perturbed its orbit and sent it...elsewhere. Since the Sun pulls things toward it, odds are that Mercury splashed into the Sun. There's a smaller chance that it was just thrown into a highly elliptical orbit, or maybe it's on the way out of the solar system now. In any case, now that Pluto's been downgraded, and now that Mercury is gone, we're down to 7 planets, and we're now the 2nd rock from the Sun. |

Quoting: Bel Biv DoomvoeNope, it hasn't been in ANY image since the transit began. So it disappeared before this transit started. It should be past the circular blob by now in any case. It's gone. We're down one planet. Let us hope that whatever gravitational force cost us Mercury doesn't also cost us Earth. |

It does seem odd that Mercury seems to be deformed while approaching the sun, but maybe it could be explained by ccd overload due to the brightness of the suns corona. Has this ever been observed with Venus while it transits the sun? Bumity |

If you watch further into the video, you will see Mercury reappear on the other side of the sun. But the guy claims it has been photo shopped in by NASA so as not to cause a panic. Who knows, but I suspect if Mercury really was missing the amateur planet watching sites would be hopping about it and no way could NASA contain something like that. So I have high suspicion that Mercury is just fine, and we see a ccd overload event in the video. |

Mercury should be in today's images, and those since the 13th of August, when the LASCO transit began. It isn't. Ergo, it is gone. Has nothing to do with CCD problems. Venus is brighter than Mercury, and Venus IS there, as you can see. What you do NOT see, in ANY of the images for this transit, is Mercury. |

There is a section where the time goes backwards and some parts clearly have been edited, and mercury SHOULD be there. But, there IS something that comes into view that most likely IS mercury. Why the video is edited, i dont know... |
