About the only thing I see missing is Night Vision.
In an apocalypse scenario there is a need for round the clock security and night vision provides a great edge.
1st Gen. units with the IR illuminator can be had for about $100 on eBay.

Another element I would look into is EMS training.
You may be the nearest thing to a doctor in a world gone bad.

If you have a pre-determined bug out location, it might not be a bad idea to create a few caches and bury them along the way in case you get side-tracked enroute to your location.

Each cache could hold a few days worth of food, first aid supplies, ammo, and maybe a knife or similar weapon.
A 1 foot section of PVC pipe capped at both ends would do the trick.
The day the soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you stopped leading them.
They have either lost confidence that you can help them or concluded that you do not care.
Either case is a failure of leadership.

I will have to stay where I am.Wish I had other options but I dont so me and the kids will get by as long as we can at home.
We dont have any family so we are on our own and pretty much isolated. So I just take it a day at a time.I somewhat believe that regardless of what we might prepare for the one thing we forgot to prepare for will be what gets us.

Re: Emergency Preparedness - Stuff you might wish you had or knew about.
There are all sorts of things we might try to be prepared for.

I have had a couple of Bug-out/GOD (Get Out of Dodge) bags since about 1996.
One large (driving), one smallish (walking).

I think the most important part of a Bug Out Bag is the plan.
I have 2 plans shared with my people. Again, 1 walking, 1 driving.

There is a 3-tiered system in place depending upon the severity of disaster. Different locations.

Maps. I have detailed 'Gazateers' of many US States. As well as alternate routes already planned. This includes remote National border trails.

Anyway, this list doesn't include all things like proper footware, clothes, gloves, different license plates and ID's, fishing gear, large axe, shovel, chainsaw, bolt-cutters etc..

But it does include what I think are some very important items.

This stove is AWESOME, it can heat a medium-sized basement and you can burn practically anything in it. Dry wood, wet wood, kerosene, gasoline, Diesel, pellets, almost anything you can imagine. And you can still get them for about 150 or less.

A must for us Northerners.

That stove is way too big and bulky. I'm sure it is nice for camping trips but not suitable for being on the move. Just saying. Research online how to make a highly efficient stove out of aluminum pop cans. Those are nice and are what you want.

If you have a feed store near by, you can pick up nice rain barrels with a lid for $20.00 a piece. They use them to ship food products, then clean them out and sell the barrel.

Night vision is extremely easy to break. Just the condensation that forms when you bring them inside from outdoors on a chilly night could be enough to destroy them. They are fragile. Just something to keep in mind. The IR illuminators are the way to go, and you could probably make your own.

MINF-NUMBING STUPIDITY...

This thread lists nothing but totally, uninformed BULLSH1T.

Start running around the country with a Remington and other such crap and, in the event of a real emergency, your family's lifespan will have been reduced to minutes or seconds. YOU WILL HAVE NO, AND I REPEAT, NO F**KING HOPE OF SURVIVAL WHATSOEVER and you'll take you kids and family down with you too.

UNF**KING BELIEVABLE - ABSOLUTELY UNF**KING BELIEVABLE

If the US collapses, this won't be some cutesy problem - some minor thing like surviving an aircrash or an inner city riot.

The state will come after you - not just requiring compliance but demanding your enthusiastic cooperation to propel your family into the mincer to use you like cannonfodder.

After Katrina, the authorities went SPECIFICALLY at those with guns. That was while there was still a Constitution and the Press - next time they won't bother with the niceties - they'll send in your neighbours, your uncles and aunts, your own teenage kids at gunpoint armed with nothing more than kitchen knives to take you down

In the French Revolution, that resulted from the King defaulting on his bonds, the rioting, lynching and murder quickly spread down from the homes of the superrich to people who would not join in the killing of "elite" like doctors, landlords and scientists.

This thread reads like a documentary proof of how mercury in lightbulbs is lowering IQ in the US by a couple of hundred points.

Sorry but I don't understand people who think that they need to be armed to the teeth to be safe. Isn't that sort of thinking precisely how the super power's arms race started?

Here's hoping for a much more peaceful route to survival of any disaster. Don't we all normally pull together when faced with a big problem in our neighbourhoods? Those who act like Rambo become feared by others and that is not a good thing as it isolates you and leaves others wary of having you near them. Your reputation will be about your guns and not about the skills you might have to offer the community.

Surviving in your house stuff:

There are a few things you can do at home to help your odds.

Water, water, and water. I rotate 15 purified gallons every six months, treated with colloidal silver.

Heat (if in cold climate) That stove is awesome and for $150, real peace of mind. If the room is too large, hang blankets to reduce the area to be heated.

Canned food and CAN OPENER. 1 word here: Aldi.

Propane Camp stove and propane cylinders. 30-40 bucks.

Duct tape and plastic sheets. Seriously. You can tape your windows to prevent shattering, and seal holes and broken windows with the plastic and duct tape.

Head-lamps, candles, oil lanterns, oil, batteries.

Depending on where you are and what's going down, it might be advisable to cover all windows with sheets and make it look like nobody is home.

ABOVE ALL- Attitude. You WILL survive.

What would be more useful than everything you listed is some type of string/fishing line. Incredibly useful for fishing and snaring and much more easy to carry around than some stupid cage. Good Lizzuck with your animal trap!

I haven't seen anyone mention a compass yet...
and if you don't have a compass, you can make one. All you need is a sewing needle, cork from a wine bottle, magnet and some water.

Take the magnet and rub it up the pin IN ONLY ONE DIRECTION repeatedly. You need to rub it in only one direction so as to make one end of the pin positive magnetizing the needle. Cut a quarter inch off the length of the wine cork and stick the sewing needle through the cork. You want it so the needle floats evenly on top of the water. The end of the needle that you were rubbing the magnet towards will point north.

You can do the same thing with just a pine needle and a pool of water. Rube the pine needle in one direction over your clothing giving it a static charge, then put the needle in some water and the tip of the needle you were rubbing towards... points north.

I would also add important documents (just in case), solid load bearing equipment and a solid knife, multitool, pocketknife combo (you knew I would say that lol)

Oh, and a network of friends and a means of communicating with them (short wave radio, etc.) hf

And a magnifying glass is a great way to start a fire... you can make a magnifying glass with some clear ice... use your hands to form the ice into a concave shape (like a magnifying glass), and presto, all you need is some dry fuel.

Oh we have this really cool hikers GPS, it lets you know how to get back where you started from and has a lot of other cool stuff.

Books ... first aid, garden, do-it-yourself repair, gun, basic survival, edible plants and mushrooms for your area are books we have or pdf's we downloaded.

Also we have a plan if tshtf while one of us is away.

A topographical map of your AO wouldn't be a bad idea either. Make sure that you laminate it.

Even if you're "bugging in", it could give you some better insight to possible routes of approach besides roads.

On the topic of roads, stay off of them if traveling by foot as much as possible. Roads are great areas for ambushes and you really make yourself a target if things get that bad. When walking along hills, walk below the ridgeline if at all possible as well.

And for you mall ninjas who plan to dress in all black "tactikewl" clothing, just remember that the color black is a snipers wet dream. There are very few things in nature that move that are actually black. hf

Wow! after reading all this I feel lucky to already be living in a "bug out" location. The only problem is you wont really know where is the safe place to be...OR where will you be if it gets bad quick like the day of a major event... Look what happend the the mammoths they found in the arctic, flash frozen, it can happen fast...because this has all happend before. It for sure will happen again. My guess is pole shift..just because of all the evidence from the past. you might for sure think about cold weather gear- could see another ice age..BOOTS!!! for sure you can always layer but the feet and hands need lots of protection.

Dig some holes deep enough till you get down that the soil is moist, roughly 2 feet wide.
Now put a container in the center of each hole you've dug.
Get some clear plastic garbage bags (clear plastic works better allowing sunlight through creating more condensation but any plastic should work) and lay the plastic over the hole. Try to create a seal with edges of the bag to the ground around the hole so none of the condensation leaks out of your water trap.
Take a golf ball sized rock and place it on top of the plastic, DIRECTLY over the container in the hole. Once the condensation builds up on the plastic, it'll run down the plastic to where the rock will direct the drips into your container.
Never tried this but you could take some hot rocks from a fire and throw them into your holes to generate more condensation.
