A two-foot-wide band of sheen stretching 30 feet from the platform, which is located in deep water south of the Mississippi-Alabama state line, was reported to the National Response Center on Tuesday. BP told federal pollution regulators that the unspecified substance came from a discharge pipe and that it was adjusting waste-treatment chemicals on the platform to remedy the problem, according to the filing.
