Obama would have run against Ryan, but through some skullduggery, sealed information from a divorce proceeding forced Ryan to drop out of the race.

Ryan was replaced by former ambassodor Alan Keyes although keyes hadn't been selected in the primary by the Republicans. Obama won easily.

Obama had two different opponents kicked off of ballots when he ran for state Senator by challenging signatures. It takes money to do something lie that, an indication that he was getting outsized backing from early on. It enabled Obama to waltz into office on both occasions.
