Could humans invent a machine that destroys the whole universe?
We are at the point where we can drop enough bombs to wipe off the entire face of the planet. in fact i'd say there are secret weapons that could probably do it with one bomb alone.

so I am wondering if humans could do something to destroy the entire universe? I guess it would have to be a quantum weapon that would slurp up the world into the nether in an exponential fashion.

what do you think??

It seems to me that you don't have the slightest idea about how small we really are in this ENORMOUS Universe.

We can't even permanantly change the climate of our own planet, never mind blow it up, never mind have any effect outside of Earth.

Man, we need several months to plug a leaking oil pipe and you are trying to discuss quantum weapons?

Re: Could humans invent a machine that destroys the whole universe?
All people would need to do would be to produce a machine that could build a copy of itself from atoms. I suppose it might also need to be able to do some sort of fusion to convert gaseous elements into solid matter as well. This machine would also need to be able to escape a gravity well such as a planet. Each machine would need to be programmed to then produce copies of itself, which also would be instructed to do the same thing. These machines would not necessarily need to be capable of faster than light travel, although that would certainly make the process quicker. Oh, and these machines would need to also be instructed not to consume copies of itself when producing new machines. This would end with the universe being full of nothing but these machines. The end.

Re: Could humans invent a machine that destroys the whole universe?
Nope. Not possible. "An effect cannot be greater than its cause." What that means is that we could never produce a bang bigger than the one which created the universe (if there was indeed a bang) - the energy simply isn't there. The most we could produce is one equal to it, and even that would be impossible since we would have to exist to push the button, and thus some of that energy would be in the form of matter.

The only way we could build a device to destroy the universe is "IF" there were a multiverse and we borrowed some energy from the multiverse to acquire enough for the device to destroy our own universe.
