Yellow fog... yellow splotches in water off of California? And Water Spouts? Could be the methane hydrates in the oceans are now melting. When that happens, you should expect the ancient anaerobic archaea to eat the methane and give off hydrogen sulfide plumes. Current scientific theory is that hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plumes are what caused the Permian-Triassic extinction event, the so-called 'Great Dying'. Hydrogen sulfide is lethal to humans in concentrations of 1 part per thousand. It was used as a makeshift chemical weapon in WWI. It is deemed a 'knockdown agent' because it kills so quickly, the 'slaughterhouse sledgehammer effect', where you are dead before you hit the ground. The Japanese have been using it to commit suicide, probably because it's so fast-acting. At very low concentrations it has a rotten egg odor. At higher concentrations it burns out your olfactory sense and you lose the ability to smell it. It causes dizziness, nausea and vomiting, headaches, etc. if you don't get a lethal dose. It will bubble up from lakes, rivers and the oceans. It is slightly heavier than air, so it will concentrate in low-lying areas, but it is close enough to the weight of air that a gentle breeze can waft it up mountainsides. Once the methane hydrates start to go, oxygen-breathing life on Earth probably has less than five years to live. That may have begun; the clock could now be ticking. |

It smelled like burning electrical wires, as if something in your engine was burning and therefore, I had to repeatedly sniff my effing a/c vent in the car to see if my car was about to explode. I looked like the sniff tard that you are. It was embarassing. |

Not sure how I am going to process that little nugget of glory. Quoting: Vesper33How I wish I were kidding you. I'm not a doomtard, never have been. The H2S problem is an extinction level event unto itself, and it's one of those self-reinforcing things that picks up momentum as it goes. Of all the possible doom scenarios, it always seemed to me like the most likely and - short of a planet-destroying impact with another body - the most deadly too. Our government is aware of this problem. If you look at the last ten years of images from the shuttles and the ISS, they have been closely watching shorelines looking for hydrogen sulfide plumes. And there are research vessels out there right now poking around the deep oceans looking for some types of life which we could use to fight this problem, either directly or via genetic modification. And they have come up with one half-assed solution. They bio-engineered some shit after the BP oil spill that eats methane but does NOT give off H2S as a byproduct of its lifecycle. So if we find an H2S plume, we could seed that area with the methane-eating creatures, and then the H2S-generating archaea would have to compete for the methane. That way not ALL of the methane gets converted to H2S. But really, this is a planetary-scale problem, and I don't know whether it's too late to do anything about it or not. It could be too late. My advice: live each day like it's your last. |

I don't think its H2S gas, I have drilled for it in south Texas and if there is enough of it for people in a large city to smell it then it would probably have killed someone already. I think anything over 150 ppm is enough to cause serious effects. Its really deadly because it only takes a few breaths to cause paralysis, then you lay there breathing it in slowly suffocating. :sigjosh: :ronswansontax: “We have allowed our nation to be over taxed and over regulated and overrun by bureaucrats, the founders would be ashamed of us for what we're putting up with.” Ron Paul . “My idea of a perfect government is one guy who sits in a small room at a desk, and the only thing he’s allowed to decide is who to nuke.
