We have halted all hiring, and have gone to absolute survival mode just within the last two weeks! We went in survival mode back in fall of 2008 where we laid off 10k people, but that was after the financial storm had already hit and we were caught off guard. It is different this time. The "powers that be" with AMEX expect a huge turn of events with regards to the economy - A huge depression to be exact. Warrent Buffet owns 12% of AMEX stock. I think he sees what is going to happen in the next month or so with the global markets and is advising Ken Chenault to batten down the hatches and keep as much cash on hand as possible. I believe they think it will start with the banks collapsing in europe, which in turn will collapse ours. Just saying, in all the years I have been with AMEX, I have never experienced such tight measures being put in placed. We are asking our employees to work even harder and with less "down time" to make up for the lack of new hires. ***The employees here feel it - just ask one!*** Back in 2008 our stock had dropped down to about $13 or $14 a share. We went from making $900 million profit per quarter down to between $100-$200 million per quarter. They do not want this to happen again! We have fully recovered since then. What say you? Me say not surprised... at all. "Nothing is as far away as one minute ago." --Jim Bishop :gameizovar: It's DO:OM o'clock. WAKE UP! |

We however were smack in the middle of interviewing and hiring another 200 customer reps and out of the blue it was suddenly halted. Our particular department has been growing immensely and still need these additional 200 employees to handle the growth. We are now pushing the limits our reps to make up for the 200 employees we will not be hiring. This happened literally overnight. I have been here 12 years and never experienced such a dramatic move. This move was made across all of our centers across the U.S. The 200 were just for my center. I am telling you, AMEX is scared of what is about to happen. They know. |

Wizard's First Rule User ID: 1026045 United States 08/21/2011 07:51 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm in Amex. The internal job ops have indeed dried up. My displacement has been extended twice now, but I'm doubtful it will be again. Current extension is through late Sep. I'm thinking that it is end game this time. OP, are you saying I might be joined by many others? Wizard's Rule #1: "People are stupid. Given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. People will believe a lie because they want to believe it's true, or because they are afraid it might be true. People’s heads are full of knowledge, facts, and beliefs, and most of it is false, yet they think it all true. People can only rarely tell the difference between a lie and the truth, and yet they are confident they can, and so are all the easier to fool." Primordial Rule: "The rule unwritten. It is the secret of all life. It is the essence of life itself. You are a creator and master of your own reality. You ultimately make your own rules." Anonymous Coward User ID: 1510126 United States 08/21/2011 07:53 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | ... WHAT ?????? I'm in a High level MGT position with CHASE VISA division. I am having the exact opposite experience. We are being told that after the fall shake out, we will be in a major "expansion" trend through the election year (After that, all bets are off ?), so much so, that I am being told to construct my hiring strategy that will need to be implemented at the start of the first quarter of 2012. Who knows? ... maybe this fall will be bumpy, but come the end of the year/beginning of the election year, the market and the economy will expand. Maybe it is manipulation due to the election year? ... I'm not sure, that would make sense. Bottom line is that I am being instructed to prepare for expansion and hiring now so we can implement the plan ASAP 1/1/2012. MAKE HAY WHILE THE SUN SHINES!! |

NWOINSURGENT User ID: 1511061 United States 08/21/2011 07:54 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Maybe. Or maybe they're just jumping on the corporate bandwagon of slave labor, you know, "we know you've done a good job for years but now we want to pay you 10% less, and oh yeah, we need you to go ahead and come in on saturdays from now on as well." I contracted for all the major telecoms for 10 years and saw this constantly from all of them; ATT, comcast, TW, adelphia, windstream. Greed of the corps boggles the mind, you should either get out or do yourself a favor and dont ever look for logic in corporate amerika. |

Well, I can tell you this much. I have a Centurion card and have had one for 2 years. My business partner and other directors in my company that are just as qualified to get one have been trying like crazy for the last several months to get one as well. The answer Amex gives "we are not issuing any new Centurion cards at this time, enrollment is closed." Period. Now I know this is an invite only program, somehow I got around that...but to get the above answer is somewhat mind boggling. not sure what to interpret from this other than... |

OP, are you saying I might be joined by many others? Quoting: Wizard's First Rule I do not know how far the cuts are going to go. First we halt hiring, second cut all unnecessary programs and benefits. Third we "Lay Off" the lowest performing folks. Then we get creative on how to generate additional income. Sometimes we do all the above simultaneously American Express weathered the 2008 storm quite well. We laid off 10k employees (generally the lowest performing). We diversified our assets into other arenas. One thing we did immediately was create the "American Express CD" and was beyond successful in creating additional revenue. I think the management of AMEX is among the best out there. Through tremendous leadership and skillful cutbacks, we successfully averted the 08' downfall. ********This time though, there is a look of fear in their eyes.*********** |
