Most southerns did not own slaves and within 15 years the cost of owning slaves would have ended this practice. While slavery is dispictible, it is still practiced in many countries. Lincoln began the process of consolidating power with the federal government. In school I was taught how both Lincoln and FDR were great Presidents. However, in conducting my own research of the actual facts, both only paved the way for a strong central government with little rights for states or individuals. No Lincoln was not a great President. Remember he had to sneek into Washington after being elected.
