Hurricane Irene first big threat to US, NC in years
Raleigh, N.C. — It's looking more likely that the rapidly intensifying Hurricane Irene, which has already cut a destructive path through the Caribbean, will impact North Carolina and possibly make landfall in the state this weekend, WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said Tuesday.

Predictions by the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Irene was likely to become a major Category 3 hurricane Tuesday. By Thursday, as it roars toward the U.S. coast over warm open waters, it could become a Category 4, with winds from 131 to 155 mph.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. -- The Coast Guard urges mariners and residents to begin planning and preparing for Hurricane Irene.

Tropical systems acquire a name when they reach tropical storm strength with sustained winds reaching 39 mph. They become hurricanes when winds reach 74 mph and become major hurricanes when winds increase to 111 mph.

Tips I can remember from cyclone Yasi which i followed closely, will come back if i remember more.


-Fill up your bath tub and any other containers you can find with water incase supply is cut/poluted. Your dunny may not flush well if water is cut, so the bath can be bucketed into the loo to flush it.
-The air pressure can play havock with your plumbing, stick a sandbag over your toilet seat
-Best place to shelter is any small room preferably towards the middle of the home. Bathrooms are not necessarily a good idea as you may end up with a lot of flying glass (worst case scenario), but if worst comes to worst, get the the tub and throw a matress over the top. Walk in robes are a great spot!
-Store up plenty of food that does not require cooking and does not need to be fridged and does not go off.
-Secure ANYTHING in your yard that could be a potential missile, this is how a lot of damage is done, flying missiles. If you have a pool, shove your tramp/swingset/outdoor table into the bottom of it, it wont go anywhere!
-board/tape up all your windows
-if you have kids you are planning on waiting out the storm with, things like mp3 players or dvd players with earphones are a great idea to distract them from the noise and keep them calm. A good assortment of entertainment is a good idea, sleeping will probably be impossible.
-don't forget your batteries, and a good portable radio.

No one is calling for a CAT 4, especially before it hits the Bahamas. It doesn't have time.

The NHC are calling for a cat 3/4. This thing is gonna be a monster by the time it gets into the bahamas and then its set to rake the entire east coast.
