Hurricane Irene could become a monster for East Coast

MIAMI - Emergency officials from Florida to the Carolinas were closely watching Irene Tuesday as the first hurricane to seriously threaten the U.S. in three years churned over energizing tropical waters. The storm has already cut a destructive path through the Caribbean.

Forecasters say the hurricane could grow to a monstrous Category 4 storm with winds of more than 131 mph before it's predicted to come ashore this weekend on the U.S. mainland. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami expected Irene to reach Category 3 strength on Tuesday, said spokesman Dennis Feltgen.

The first hurricane of the 2011 Atlantic season, which was as large as it was intense, was expected to swing parallel to Florida's east coast Thursday for a possible landfall in North or South Carolina Saturday.

Irene, the ninth named storm of the busy 2011 Atlantic season, looks set to be the first hurricane to hit the United States since Ike savaged the Texas coast in 2008.

Much of the Peach State has been suffering from what federal authorites categorize as "extreme drought" -- conditions not as bad as those currently afflicting Texas but bad enough to threaten crucial cotton and peanut crops. The Atlanta NBC affiliate WXIA reports that some areas are facing rain deficits of 14 inches this summer.

Now the farmers are watching with some consternation as Irene appears to be headed out of their path.

"Even if Irene was to come up the coast, the fact we would be on the left side of the hurricane would mean we probably still wouldn't receive a tremendous amount of rainfall from it," Georgia climatologist David Stooksbury told the channel in a separate report.
