I have relatives upstate, and was going to go labor day, would be tougher to get it all together in the next two days, but if the hurricane hits,It could screw things up for weeks.

No power, no water, no food, no deliveries,

This is Emily in New Orleans. You helped me tremendously on another thread earlier this week.

I stayed in New Orleans for Katrina. I recommend you get yourself out of the city and be with people you know and trust. Bring as much food and water as possible. Empty the fridge and clean it, and make sure you turn off the gas before you leave. If you have a pet, bring it along. Do not leave it chained in the yard or locked in the house. Take out the trash and GO.

I don't mind dying, I'll only be reborn in another body and it might be heroic and I could just return in two weeks after the carnage,

I am glad i helped emily, I am getting a hit vibe, and it will be impossible to leave once the word spreads like that, i have to make a choice in the next 48 hours, even though it won't hit for anothe 72 hours after that.

Don't let yourself get caught in the gridlock of evacuation. go as soon as possible, as soon as you make the decision. If you decide to stay, go out tonight and buy whatever preps you will need. If you want a list, let me know, or google hurricane supplies. I'd prefer that you go, if you have a safe place. Just remember, everyone else is thinking and wondering the same things. don't get caught in the crowd. A frightened mob is an ugly thing to be stuck in. Not something I talk about much.

Thought of that, I just emailed my aunt, she'd have to buy the amtrack ticket. If they sell out, then I am stuck with whatever happens, Canned tuna protein bars, lots of water, save like 5 liters, i live in an old building I think the water flush is gravity, not electric, not sure though. the water going off is the worst, the stink of the toilet-- during a blackout, when I had money, I flushed the toilet with Perrier!! only in ny.

I flushed my toilet with buckets of flood water, followed by a cup of bleach. If you are staying put for this, one thing you should do is start filling containers with water for drinking, cooking, and flushing the toilet. 5 liters will not last but a few days. I didn't have running water or electricity for 3 months after Katrina.

matches
dried fruit
water
cereal
stuff you can eat without cooking
can opener
rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide
trail mix
candles in glass containers
two flashlights and extra batteries
battery powered fan
battery or wind-up radio
beer (good for trade)
toilet paper
bleach
extra cell phone batteries, charged

After Katrina, the cell phones were only good for texting, and texting takes less power. Write down your contact list on paper so you won't waste power searching for numbers.

One exception, you will need to be aware of your sea level as compared to the storm surge. If you are close to the coast and too low, you could get flooded and of course, depending on the severity of the storm surge, you could conceivably drown. That is how most people die from hurricanes. I think the second leading cause of death are trees falling on people while they hunker down in their homes, or afterwards when they are cleaning up the debris.

I am on the third floor of an apartment, about 20 plus feet to street level, then about 20 feet to the east river, 40 feet, and the storm surge coule be very intense and I'd have to go up two more flights to the roof, would not want to swim in that water,

If that happened, It is a 3 month repair on this city and not be fun to be here, that is why i am thinking of the bug out, why not be upstate in a warm bed, if they have me?

If you have vacation time coming from your work, take it. Take your pets, important papers, and anything of value with you.Now is a good time to visit your family. If the storm hits NYC, the looting will probably be the worst of the problems.

I really think you should go. Trapped in a building surrounded by water, hungry neighbors who did not prepare, and looters is a bad bad thing. When my neighbors started physically fighting over their food, I chose the flood water and waded out of New Orleans for fear of being shot by the asshole with a gun. Do not put yourself in that situation.

This storm shouldn't bring much damage directly to NYC, but it could impact the shore areas, Long Island, and some of the low lying areas of NY if it would hit directly.

You have a few days before you have to decide, so if I were you I would wait and see. If you do decide to leave Friday AM is probably when you should leave so as to avoid any Saturday rush ... but most people will stay put in the city even if it it projected to be hit ... though there WILL BE massive amounts of people leaving the coastal areas and Long Island.
