The History Channel did a Mega Disaster show on it. Hells Bells, if Irene steams into port in NYC as a cat-3, it'll make New Orleans look like comedy shop... Frak! I don't even want to THINK about that. Those idiots think it's the end of the world when they get 3 or 4 inches of snow. WTF would they do when the subways are fooded, Long Island is scoured bare with everything once on it in the Atlantic and a death toll in the thousands? If we aren't actually in a depression NOW, we would be then. |

That would really fuck them but good, all those multi million dollar homes. bye bye I was in East Hampton during Hurricane Bob in 1991 at my Aunt's house, they just built it, and they kept the windows shut, not equalizing the pressure and the house moved, you could feel the pressure twisting the place, well they opened the windows, a smidge. The eye went right over, and had they been on the right, east side, it would have been bye new home. for the east side of the hurricane is much stronger than the west side. In any event, it is coming That experience tells me not to take Irene for granted even though i am in manhattan surrounded by stone Let be be finale of seem The only emperor is the emperor of ice cream--Wallace Stevens I have seen the eternal footman hold my coat and snicker and in short I was afraid--T.S. I almost started a thread about this, but used the search function and found this thread. This should be on the front page... Hurricane Irene gained strength Tuesday night and is now a Category 3 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale. The storm is projected to reach the East Coast beginning Friday and into the weekend, and already authorities are telling New York area residents to be on alert. [link to www.ibtimes.com] This is a potentially dangerous situation for a lot of people, and I don't think that many people in New York are aware of just how dangerous it could be... Most of the information I could find about New York being susceptible to flooding is in relation to Global Warming dangers and an increase in severe storms. Considering that much of the metropolitan region of New York City is less than 16 feet above the mean sea level, with some parts of lower Manhattan only about 5 feet above the mean sea level, a rise of 8.3 inches in addition to the global mean rise would pose a threat to this region, especially if a hurricane or winter storm surge occurs, Yin said. Quoting: The Fifth Element I wouldn't think about it, I would just leave. I remember this episode vividly. Manhattan is the last place in the United States you want a Hurricane to hit, whether its a Category 2 or even a 1. It is on the ocean. It will flood. People will die. It only takes those 3 lines to have me booking a trip inland. All is divine in your minds eye. :snbanner: |

I'd bug out of here now but I'm taking care of my elderly mom who's confined to a wheelchair. I hope I can report to you Tuesday that her house is still standing and the power is still on. Otherwise we're fuckin' cooked here. |
