Also, the ion tail of comet Elenin has been calculated to be 3,000,000km in length. The sodium tail of comet Hale-Bopp had a length of nearly 50 million kilometers. Based on the current calculated orbit before the CME, comet Elenin will pass closest to the Earth on October 16 2011 at a distance of around 35 million kilometers from our planet.
