UHH IVE BEEN THRU SEVERAL HURRICANES AND IRENE IS REALLY NOTHING-WHATS WRONG W U FOLKS?

So glad to find this thread. I'm with you, OP. It's a hurricane. Happens all the time. My husband and I are in disagreement about how bad it's going to be. It's only, what, a cat 2 now? I bet it won't even be that by the time it gets up to the northeast. What sensationalist nonsense.

And before anyone gets their panties in a wad: Yes, I understand that hurricanes are dangerous. Yes, I understand that they are huge inconveniences. And my well wishes are with everyone in the path of this one. MY PROBLEM is the attitude so many have that this storm is special, or unusual, or doomarific. It's none of those things. It's a hurricane. In the Atlantic Ocean. In August. It's not even that strong. Could not be more normal.

There are just so many self-congratulatory posters on GLP today, it's amazing.

What a load of shit. The dam breaking caused all the chaos from Katrina and that didn't happen until AFTER the storm. I don't think any of those areas are anywhere near that kind of danger, except maybe the Outer Banks and some other beach areas in NC.

Sure the northeastern part of the country isn't used to hurricanes but this storm will be a category 1, and a weak one by the time it arrives. The northeast is far from the tropics and the water will not be warm enough to provide the energy it needs to be this terrible "catastrophe".

Irene really isn't anything but the media will continue to hype this shit up and for what - greed. This hype machine will sell survival supplies, rations, etc. and as everyone tunes in to watch the "drama" unfold the ratings on tv will go through the roof which means more revenue via advertisements. Don't forget even more advertisements via facebook, twitter, and other related websites like news and weather outlets.

The world is filled with greedy idiots. When you get to the heart of almost every issue nowadays, greed will be there looking back at you.

I've been trough several myself and one of Texas's worst storms wasn't even a hurricane... it was a tropical storm. Allison. Don't get fixated on numbers, any storm will fucking kill you fucking retards, be prepared for all of them.

I have lived and been thru alot of hurricanes while i grew up and lived in florida from 1964 thru 1989 and irene is really nothing compared to others which is why I really dont understand why yall are making such a big deal about it?
Even if its a direct hit in nc or ny so what?
Its not that strong of a cane anyhow and its one that if I was in it would be outside enjoying the winds from it like I always did when I went thru them when I was young.
