Dog predicting earthquake with seizures?
I know I told a few of you the day the quake hit VA, that my 8.5 year old Rottie, Suki, had a grand mal seizure a few hours before it hit. My boyfriend and I were stumped as to what was going on, since she's in perfect health, and has never had a history of epilepsy, or any other neurological condition.

Over the past couple days, she's been recovering from it and has almost about sprung back to her normal, jovial self.

This morning around 4:30am, my boyfriend took her outside before he left for work, and she wouldn't come back inside. Wouldn't budge. He had to practically carry her in the house. He then commented to me she was acting weird like the day of the quake. I shrugged it off and made some goofy remark, gave her some water and she was fine.

About 15 minutes ago, she had ANOTHER massive seizure, so much so that she bit her lip and began to bleed. She's now showing signs of normal behavior after a seizure (confusion, disorientation, weakness, growling, etc).

I'm wondering.. did she know the quake was coming, and if so, will there be another one soon? I'm in New Jersey, but we felt it here bad enough to shake things off of my desk and shelves.

I tried to do some research the other day on the event of animals predicting quakes, in regards to seizures, and came up with this:

[link to www.oakton.edu]

It states what various animals have been known to do pre-quake. Mice act drunken and disoriented, and have seizures/convulsions. Now, I know she's no mouse, but who's to say it's limited to just that creature?

Please no comments on "take her to the vet", etc etc.. I've already been in contact with who I need to be and so forth.

Just wanted to share in case anyone else has had similar issues, and since I feel it might be connected, but who knows.

On a side note: Every one of my cats (6 in total), and other critters we have here were acting VERY strange a few hours before the quake, and started to show the same signs of hiding under things/not acting themselves last night. My exotic shorthair still will not come out from under the bed, and he's the most personable cat you could ever meet.

One of my dogs is epileptic and has cluster seizures. There doesn't seem to be a common cause for his and we've even gone through the moon phases etc.

I can't see why it couldn't be that your dog felt something. Humans do with pressure headaches and feeling giddy etc.

Our dog certainly "appears" to have a headache a couple of days before his seizures - he hides his head by putting his paws over himself.

Re: Dog predicting earthquake with seizures?
welllll.....first id like to say sorry about your dawgie having the seizures because they are horrendous to watch and theres really nothing much to do other than comfort them and keep them safe but your post certainly interested me because it tells me im not the only one thinking this , my girl (a german shepherd aged 4 years) has been having intermittent cluster seizures for 3 and a half years and is on heavy medication because of them. im in australia so we dont get many earthquakes as such so it never crossed my mind until a few months ago and the penny dropped then this weekend (but we'll get to that shortly) has convinced me im not crazy ...we have changed her medication several times and we have finally settled on zonesemide + phenobarbitone twice daily this was after the last cluster seizures she had which resulted in a small stroke to half of her body which we are hoping will remedy itself soon.... right now to the interesting part ...i had done the moon phases, diet, household allergies and every other posible causes even MY "cycle" and eliminated all genetic and physical abnormalities but all to no avail and her neuroligist (yes you read right her neuroligist) said it ws just something that happens and i could look forever for causes and get nowhere so basically it was shut up and pay up...i keep diaries of her seizures and after the bad one which gave her the stroke i was thinking she had the seizures 1-2 days prior to the new zealand earthquake but the day of and after she was fine so i started going back and doing my history ...turns out that whenever she has had seizures within 2 days there has been a "news worthy" earthquake somwhere in the world, she had them prior to the japan quake, chile and others and its got to the point that when she has them now i know im gonna read it in the paper soonafter, the zonesemide has calmed her right down and i thought we had it licked till last sunday and boy was she in a bad way.. i was trying to get valium into her faster than her lil body could take it but i just wanted them to stop, boy was i scared, she had gone 3 months without a single seizure and now i thought i was losing her, come monday lunchtime and she was fine but extremely tired and stoned from the valium but no signs of further seizures then on wednesday in the paper was the earthquake in bali again a relatively close distance to me so the Seismometer had shown significant activity as it did for the new zealand one (you can check out seismometer readings online) where she didnt have quite so stong seizures for the japan one even though it was bigger the Seismometer reading over here was a lesser impact ...sorry this was long winded but the bottom line is i think we are onto something here and i just wish instead of taking my money and treating me like a fool, vets would listen to me, then take my money, then RESEARCH and finally help others cos sometimes those of us that love our pets so dearly may just have the answer, not the cure but answers ....pity we cant predict the earthquakes to predict the seizure aye but thats a whole new kettle of fish ....take care and thank you for putting up this post cos you have taken away the crazy lady syndrome i was suffering ...love to you and your dawgie suki xoxo's from tonella and aiesha (the dawgie)in australia
