Lets define the political spectrum. Some of you are really confused.
Far Leftist, who wants people to have all social freedoms, but no economic freedoms. (democrat)

Far Rightist, who wants people to have all economic freedoms, but no social freedoms. (republican)

Far Upist, who wants people to have all freedoms (a pure libertarian).

Far Downist, who wants people to have no freedoms (a pure totalitarian).

As you can see, the pure libertarian state represents the pro-freedom positions of both the leftist and rightist agendas, while the totalitarian state represents the anti-freedom positions of both those agendas.

In the United States which proclaims its superiority among the world's governments in preserving and protecting the freedom of its citizens, and where all school children daily pledge allegiance to the flag, ending with the words -- "with liberty and justice for all", one would expect many Americans to be in the upper quadrant, or the one-fourth of the spectrum labeled "Libertarian".

Media pundits force a political tight rope walk by confining debate to the left-right axis, while the political spectrum is actually TWO DIMENSIONAL, THINK!....

Labels are for people who can't think for themselves. I don't need someone define and package things for me.

If you can't define which of the political spectrum is best suited to you, how will you be able to find a candidate who best suits your positions? This is not a label, but rather a tool to help you towards discovery of your views. I'm not suggesting YOU personally don't know your views. Many here are confused....

Re: Lets define the political spectrum. Some of you are really confused.
actually OP this is not entirely correct.
I don't particularly like your scale system but if we use it then far up would not be total freedom, and definitely would not be libertarian. If far down is totalitarian then the opposite would be anarchy. I don't think any libertarian holds to the values (or lack there-of) of anarchy.
the problem with a libertarian idea is that when the morals of people go down than people turn to the government to protect them. We as a nation can never expect to return to the freedoms we once had if we don't take personal responsibility for our actions.

OP this is mostly for you, because the average GLPer is not at this level

It depends on how far to the extreme you carry the view. It is a rare individual who is at the extreme edges of any spectrum. It just helps you define which way you lean. Don't think in extremes they are dangerous.

you are right..I wont argue with you, because I am on the same mindset as you. I just think many people love to scream about the freedoms they deserve without taking ownership of the responsibilities that go hand and hand with freedom

they not only don't understand the spectrum and where they stand...they don't comprehend the difference between rights and privelages
