Re: >>>>Sustainable Living PLUS Canning and Dehydrating Food<<<<
I had this long post all written out and then the baby crashed some furniture, so I had to bolt.
We will be spending our tg at my parents house. They live about 10 minutes away. They used to live in Bluffton, SC then we made them move back here with us.
Anyways, I'm in charge of all of the potatoes...whipped and sweet! Plus the pecan pie!
TG, I will be saying a prayer for your daughter. I hope she gets to feeling better soon.
Flava, I was thinking, is there any Christmas Boutiques at any of the churches/schools locally you could sell your goodies at?

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU AND ALL YOUR FAMILIES!!

I am going to see about putting them in salons, and my sister in law works at a school and is gonna put some in the front office. I also am making them for gifts so if I dont sell all the stuff I made for the craft sale, they become christmas gifts.

Drendwire and TG,

Thank you for explaining that to me.

I am sorry that i had to bring up such a hurtful subject xo

I know the rest of the story.

When i was only about 15 years old i read the story of crazy horse and related books that held the truth.

What i learned then has stayed in my heart since.

There is song about crazy horse that is nearly half an hour long, that i used to have a record of, it is in my head now and i want to hear it real bad.

Was it arlo guthrie?

My love to you both xo

I am so sorry

T, I think the only thing that wouldn't be appropriate is to continue the mythes and the lies of the past. I don't have Native American ancestors, but my family is of mostly German descent. During WWI, many freedoms were taken away and during WWII it was even worse. At that time church was still in German, but it became illegal. Our schools weren't "allowed" to teach us German until well into the 1980's, but at least, our heritage wasn't totally wiped out. People weren't allowed to speak German in public and at that time, it was common. That said, it didn't dissapear totally, like most Native American languages.

The people with all the power will always take advantage of others, no matter what their heritage. It is always wrong. I know NZ and Oz have similar histories, every country does. I wonder when we'll all be able to see others for how they are and not what they have?

For me, Thanksgiving isn't about the pilgrims, but my family and being grateful for what I DO have and that I still have family around to love and be loved by. I can't remember the exact quote or who said it right now, (I'm done for the day and my brain is too tired!) but basically, it says if we don't learn from the mistakes of the past, we'll just keep making the same ones over again. I think that should be the real message of Thanksgiving.

One thing I am very thankful for is all of you. It's better than having old school penpals, no writer's cramp! Have a wonderful holiday everyone and love each other. We're all we have!

Re: >>>>Sustainable Living PLUS Canning and Dehydrating Food<<<<
Does anyone reading this thread have any experience with making homemade body soaps and shampoos? I am looking for a good basic recipe that isn't frilly or fancy. I don't want any added scents or chunks of stuff like oat, etc. Just good ole' cheap soap for hard times and everyday use too. I've got a good recipe for laundry soap using Fels Naptha, Arm and Hammer Washing Soda and Borax. It makes 5 gallons of laundry soap for about $1.75-$2.00 and works really well.

Now if I could make soap for us people (and maybe the pets). Thanks in advance!!!

Hi, Without a trace. Flavapor does alot of that stuff, but she'll be out for a couple of days. I haven't done much with homemade soap, but we've all been making the laundry soap. I've just started, but some of the others have been doing it for years. I'm sure Flav will have some ideas for you if you can check back. If you have any good ideas to post, feel free. Withoutatrace, welcome to our crazy little world. Here is a good soap making recipe site. It will explain the how and whys of REAL soap making from mother earth. You can also buy the lye crystals if you want and do it that way. Just be careful that lye water is caustic. Wear gloves. It is also a long process unless you are making liquid soap.

Cleaning old used jars with rusty tops. I've tried alot of different techniques and this one is by far the easiest. Take the jars outside to an area with exposed dirt. Best dirt for this is fine gritty dirt. Spray a little water onto dirt, make a puddle. Mash an old washcloth into mud. Use muddy washcloth like you would use a Brillo pad. Rust comes right off the jars. Also works great for removing label glue from the jars.

cool. sounds like fun as well!! kinda cold here to do that right now, but i'll try that out when it warms up.

Thanks for the link, flavapor, I have seen his site before and it's amazing!

I have a quick question about making lye from wood ash. I understand that it's just water poured over the ash, but if someone is doing this in a bucket, is it necessary to let the water sit in the ash for a while before it is drained off? If so, how long?

I'd rather make my own lye than rely on a store supply of lye.

Thread: Soap From Scratch - When the Preps Run Out

Ok, I hope I did this right. I'm still a little dozy from yesterday and the weather today. It should be Planet Hopper's thread about making soap. It has several videos about making lye.

Yeay!!!! I love it when I get things on this machine right!!

Withoutatrace, I hope this helps. I'm a little nervous about lye, myself. Too many stories from my gran about things years ago at the farm! I have to admit I'm a little chicken about doing some things...until I have to take a deep breath, swallow and then, jump in! Good luck with your projects and let us know how they turn out. I, for one, really want to know.

I don't know if he's right or not. The predictions he makes about Texas that I've seen have been close to right. The problem even the "experts" have is, Texas is HUGE!! It's really hard to forecast weather here, because of the span of the land in our part. There aren't as many people out here in West Texas as there is from Dallas/Ft.Worth east.

This is Flavapor

Withoutatrace, the video that TB posted is accurate, I dont make my own, I just know how for SHTF purposes. I live in Fla and dont get that much wood ash, in this climate we dont burn to many fires.

Glad everyone had such a nice Thanksgiving.

Drendwire

I dont know how to dehydrate meat except for jerky, and I was told it cant be vacuum sealed and still be safe. If you have a method of doing it, what is it???
Thanks in advance

I did well at the yard sale with both junk, oops treasures, and my jewelry and soaps, the dry oils and body scrubs were a big hit. Doing it again tomorrow and I hope to sell all my treasures (junk) so I dont have to load it to the curb or bring it home. We do a craigslist curb alert and most stuff is gone within 3 hours. Have a good night all.
