I honestly can't see a reason to worry about it even if you had a septic system. We have a cesspool that was grandfathered when we bought the house. We'll have to replace it if/when we sell the property, but I haven't had any problems. We have elm trees all around the "pit" and they haven't suffered. Actually, the grass there is growing better than it did before.

The only complaint I have heard is they can get "stinky" if left closed. I always leave my oldie but goodie open when empty. We are starting to see an issue with the old gal, when washing towels or heavy loads and it stops, when you remove the first few items it will try to spin some more. Not sure if it is the weight or the dial that is the problem. Youngest daughter always seems to forget to press in the dial before she turns it.

I started making it earlier this year and it works well. Just dont leave wet clothes sit too long as their is no fragrance. Wish it actually smelled like the Fels Napta bar though. You get a lot for your money!
The last batch I did I thought I would experiment and add 1 cup of Oxyclean. Wont be doing that again. Going back to the original recipe and will be making it this weekend!!!

I still have a top loader, but my daughter has a front loader. She hasn't had any trouble with it getting stinky. We had one 20 some years ago in Holland, and it would get a little stinky. It wouldn't drain as well as they do now.

It sounds like you might have to replace it soon, or call the repairman.

Yeah, don't remember what I read now, but it surprised me that some weren't happy with theirs. I always leave mine open when not being used, too.

I'd sure hate to have another one though if I had one as special as yours. With each load you put in, you could think back on all the memories. 8) Hope yours makes it for a long, long time. Longer time. LOL.

Mama, what did it do with the oxyclean? I was wondering how it turned out for you.

I'm hoping I don't have to replace it. They just don't make them like they used to. It's a Kenmore so perhaps I should call a repairman to check it out.

Its actually a field that is mostly dirt and weeds, but none that stick you. I dont know what buffalo grass is, but Im glad I dont have it.

I seemed to have a chemical reaction and overflow. Maybe my pot was too small. Anyways, the Oxyclean clumped up and it never gelled. It was like white clumps in liquid and there was no real smell to it. Normally you can smell the aroma of the Fels Naptha soap prior to washing. I wonder though if you make it in poweder form if it wouldn't be an issue.

EEuuww!! I hate clumps! I used to use powdered soap and gave it up for liquid. The powder just wouldn't dissolve and we'd have little white specks all over everything.

I make it all the time and I love it. I am on septic and have a front loader. I have used it about 2 yrs now.

I put some fragrance oil that I buy just for laundry, (they make all the laundry scents, downy, gain, etc. ) It cost 15 bucks for 16 oz and I use about 3 oz in 2.5 gallons.


The other thing I do is buy unscented inexpensive hair conditioner from sally beauty supply. Its about 7 bucks for a gallon, you mix one part conditioner and two parts water and you have fabric softener. (you could get scented if your detergent isnt scented) Thats 3 gal of softener for 7 bucks.

I miss real grass! We did get a small patch to re-seed in the yard this summer. We probably should buy stock in a grass seed company, though. It'd be cheaper than buying all the seed we need after 2 years of drought!

Buffalo grass is a feed grass down here. There are a few patches of it left from the previous owners. It grows really fast and tall. Great if you live at the little house on the prairie!

That's where you get your conditioner from. I remember you telling me about it, but didn't think it was that cheap at Sally's. Yeah!! Another $10 I can save! Thx, Flav!

I tried to use it up, then I ended pouring the last 2 inches out of the bucket because I was sick of it and the crummy odor it gave off.

yeah, its pretty cheap if you buy the brand they label. works great and you will save more than 10 bucks, that stuff costs ten bucks for a 64 oz

That may work. That OxyClean gave off a funky odor. I decided to leave it out. This last batch came out even better than the first one.

This is so cute. Our dog is getting old (she is 11 or 12, not really sure since we were her 3rd home). I told hubby it was getting hard for her to jump on and off the bed so I suggested he build some stairs. He said no stairs, we should get her a mini trampoline!

ok, so this coming sunday is my 50th birthday. My family has got something planned, dont know what it is but they are so not sneaky about it like I am.

I think they are having a party for me here at the house, my guess is its saturday night.

My daughter bought me a night at a hotel at the beach on Friday, and my husband said lets make two days out of it and not come home till the late afternoon and stop for dinner. Then the give away is that he has been cleaning the back yard up for the last two weeks.
