You guys are right in the middle of one of my favourite topics!

I would love to hear about your Grandma's freezer jam recipe!
Do tell!
 Quoting: MamaHasAwakened

I will give it to ya! I know you well and will try not to forget.

The major deal that I can tell everyone, that my Grandma always told me, even back to the early 70's was to not use jello gelatin! Grandma said to use 'Sure -Jell", and she is, was, and always was right! ALWAYS!!! Freezer Jam +SureJell perfection! Grandma is long gone, but I keep those recipies! I was there! I watched, and learned..,and loved it!

I can give more exact recipes for...
Strawberry, Raspberry, Blackberry, or Peach "Freezer Jam", but it's late...right...

Fun, sustainable topic !

I look forward to sharing and have it pinned...

Nines, you doing okay?
Has dudely brought the girlfriend around anymore? She's probably like...ugh...you still live in your mom's attic?

chuckle
 Quoting: MamaHasAwakened

HAHAHA. Shred those phone records good Mama. Shred them good.

Doing fine here, and hope you are the same. Haven't seen Dudely's girlfriend again, but I feel eyes watching when Dudely starts his journey toward food. By the time she comes out, it's pitch dark.

She's probably not as concerned with his living quarters as his table manners. Once in a while I hear a Dudely, "GRAHHH", that means, hands off, it's mine. Manners aren't his thing. chuckle

Have you seen the dog again, the one that was on the road? Hope you stopping to deliver him made them decide to either watch closer or fence him in.
 Quoting: Nine's

Yeah, me too! Have not seen him again, but will look for him tomorrow! He'll be coming with me if I find him in the road again. I sure do miss having a dog in the house! Lots of crumbs everywhere!
 Quoting: MamaHasAwakened

Good for you Mama. It would be a lucky dog, that's for sure!

PS. Who is this person StilettoXXX who offers freezer jam recipes? Is it an infiltrator? Has this person offered a recipe yet? Should we welcome this person and offer coffee, or do we make her wash the pot for a while til we see the recipe?

HAhaha. Welcome Stiletto. Have some coffee.

HAHAHA!! You are right as always, Flav. Mama didn't have anything to do with it...other than contacting the news stations to be on standby if it should be necessary. But, you made the right choice, so now they won't be called.

Seriously, I've never raised pigs. My only experience is other peoples, and my grandmas so it would be hard for me to suggest anything.

Here's a link to a group that has a lot of hands on members in just about any farm or self sufficiency thing. I'm not a member but do read there and they seem to know what they're talking about. Hope it's ok to link it. If not, I'll pm it to you.

[link to www.homesteadingtoday.com]

I've also seen people here on GLP that talk about raising pigs, so if any of them see this, maybe they'll answer.

The second link is for pot bellied pigs, but it might also have helpful info. I thought both links offered enough info that you can pluck enough to make your own decision. Good luck!

Any of you familiar with oven canning? It's for dry goods. I was thinking with all those "soup in a jar" recipes that are so popular this time of year it might be a good way to make them last longer. The long and short of it is you fill the jars, put them in the oven at 200 (without lids) for an hour, then you take them out and put the lids on. The heat is supposed to kill any bug eggs that might be in the dry goods and heat the jars enough so the flat lids seal. Thoughts?

Using a Foodsaver vacuum attachment would work better. Heat may change the flavor of the spices.

Boy I ALWAYS miss you guys lately!! SO and Mama, I looked into dry canning a while back. I couldn't find anything too good about it. It probably is ok for some things, but there are better ways. The vacuum sealer is for sure better, I think. I was going to try baking bread in jars, too, but I started reading blog posts from people that tried it. It's ok for gifts and short term, but it was suggested to freeze the jars after baking. SOOO......I haven't done it yet. I'm thinking about it for Christmas gifts, but I hate to give up my jars. You know they just never find their way home!LOL

Flav, I have a friend that raised show pigs. If you want I can ask him about a girlfriend for Bacon!

Tiny...come back and keep us company! How's the kitteh's?

Nine's...you're just BAD!! Did you get any snow the other day? It looked like you should have.

I invited another friend over for coffee, too. Her name is NovaMom. She wants to learn about canning.

Stilleto, we're kind of crazy in here, but we're really ok!

I guess I'll have to catch you all in the daylight! 'Nite.

Fair warning - I am going to rant...that being said here goes. I just found out my son in law is being deployed AGAIN. Ship out date is sometime in January. This time is to Guam, and again it is for him only. The Air Force has not said how long he will be gone. He just got back from Korea in July, and my daughter is just now finishing the unpacking from her move to Missouri. He has been in the Air Force now for 4 years and has been out of the country for most of the time. They told him 2 years before the next deployment...guess they changed their mind. He has already been to Kuwait, Iraq, the Philippines, South Korea, now Guam. On the upside, perhaps my daughter can come home for an extended visit. Guess I need to find the bright side here. I just don't want to see her all alone in Missouri.

Wow, SO. That's why hubs retired when he did. He had just come back from Afghanistan and they wanted him to go back 6 months later. Lots of people from his "shop" had NEVER been. Something is in the wind, I think. They DO change their mind often. Unfortunatly, that's military life. It's a hard one, but one that can be the most interesting, too. Maybe closer to time, he'll have a better idea of how long he'll be gone. Normally, it's on the orders, but these days it may not be. Bring her home if you can, even if it's just for awhile. Thanks TB, being the GLP mom that I am I started googling for info. I found this and also posted it on Military Man's thread.

However, beginning in 2013, along with flying “Global Strike” missions, no-stop round trip sorties from Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, the Spirit stealth bombers will begin deploying abroad.

First of all in the Asia-Pacific region, and then in Central and South America, Southwest Asia, and Europe where there are no permanently assiged bombers.

Officially, the B-2 is the only platform capable to deliver the Massive Ordnance Penetrator 30,000lb bomb. Capable to destroy bunkers in Syria, Iran or North Korea.
[link to theaviationist.com]

Looks like they are moving some B-2's over so they have to send a crew over to train them how to load.

That's what I was thinking too. Glad to see I'm not just paranoid. You have been through this so I trust your judgement. I feel for them, they have only been able to live together for 4 months so far. Not to mention she has started to make friends and got a job on base and started a photography business. If he will be gone very long (and you and I both know he will be) I'm going to try to get her to move back here again. Even if we have to pay for the Uhaul and move her ourselves. It's the whole bunker buster for Syria, Iran, and North Korea that has me worried.

If he will be gone very long (and you and I both know he will be) I'm going to try to get her to move back here again. Even if we have to pay for the Uhaul and move her ourselves. It's the whole bunker buster for Syria, Iran, and North Korea that has me worried.

Ok, my mom panic is over for now, let me tell you the wife side. She will have the best support system possible on the base, if she stays. Having a job there is good, too. People there understand what she'll be going through and will help. If she moves back with you, she won't have that. The base will "forget" where she is. That happened to me the last time. Keep your plans ready and let them know that it is on the table. It'll help. Maybe, after a couple of months, she'll be ready for a vacation with the folks. CRAP, SO. I just read your post on MM's thread. Bring her home! I don't like this at all.

I don't like it either. No dates on the orders yet. They just found out tonight. No actual date for ship out other than January and no return date as of yet.

Sorry, I was re-reading and realized I was sounding like a mom. Boy, they sure do like to mess up the holidays, don't they? I didn't mean to tell you what to do, I can hear what MY daughter would say if I tried to tell her what to do. AND...I KNOW what I DID tell my mom years ago.

We will see how it goes. I'm sure it will put a damper on the holiday, or maybe they will appreciate it a bit more. Sucks his Christmas leave was cancelled.

They cancelled it AGAIN? Huh-uh! That's just wrong! Can he take some now, instead of waiting until Christmas? Maybe they can have a couple of days and have it early.

Bad joke time...Now you guys know why I went TOTALLY gray during the first Gulf War!

edit* AND, I was only 30!

Yep, 3 years in a row now. Poor guy. Guess it is good he is advancing and they want him to train, but damn hard to have a marriage that works well. So far they are doing pretty well. I guess it helps that they were best friends for so long before they started a relationship. I don't think he can get leave before he goes. He is supposed to go in January.

It IS really hard. I have lots of friends that their marriage didn't survive, but if they have truly made a commitment in the hearts, it'll work. Hubs and I lived in different states for 2 years. The first year, I was able to go there about once a month. The second year, I only went a couple of times. It was awful and it was hard when he did move back home, but we did survive. Sometimes, it felt like that was all we did, but it's all good now. Now, we have empty nest stuff to deal with instead!! They'll be ok, mom. With you helping, they'll do just fine.

Maybe if it a short deployment, 6 months or so, she can come back for an extended visit. What's one more person, another cat, and a dog? We already have the youngest daughter, a foster daughter, tortoise, cat, and dog. At least they all get along!

I guess it depends on the world, too. She may not be able to get off work or give up her job right away. If he's going to stay in, she'll have to learn how to cope with it all sooner or later. It looks like sooner.

Maybe, just play it by ear for now, but be ready. It's been too long, but they may pay for a move or at least, storage. I really don't know how it works anymore, though. It's changed quite a bit since hubs retired. I think just knowing she has a safety net, will go a long way with them. It'll make both of them feel more secure. It's so hard to remember they're adults now, isn't it?
