I think we all need to find something to smile about today. The world has just gotten way too damn depressing. I am ever so thankful for you all, you really make me smile and think the world just might be ok. Thank you for that!

Yes, thank you SO. It sure was a depressing day.

I cant imagine those parents feelings right now, and what first popped into my head was how horrible it will be for them to go home and see Christmas gifts that they carefully purchased for their child that wont ever recieve them.

I know that sounds like a strange first thought, but that is what it was, and how this terrible tragedy will effect them for so many Christmas' to come.

For the life of me I dont understand why someone could do harm to a perfect stranger, much less a child. I know he had high functioning autism, but so did the guy on American Idol a yr or two ago. Such a sad, sad, day.

You have no idea how much I look forward to this thread. You are a bright spot in what can be a really dismal world.

I cannot imagine how those parents would feel. I'm sure it's as bad as the worst nightmare imaginable. As for the shooter, his family members must be living in a turmoil right about now. They will wonder what they could have done to prevent a tragedy. The sad answer is, probably not much if you believe everything the psych doctors tell you. If he was on medication it was obviously the wrong one and went sideways, or he just stop taking them cold turkey.

My youngest daughter was on serious psych meds at 15 years old (seroquel). She took them for a bit, about 6 months or so, then looked them up and studied them and said no thank you. We looked at her research and said, ok no more of these meds but you have to step down. We did it with a plan and have found fish oil and vitamins/minerals work better for her. Psych meds are scary, and they are not always the right answer. The human brain is a complicated thing. One size does not fit all when it comes to treating these issues.

I am so glad we were able to find the right answer for her. In our case it was green super food juice, the stuff that looks like pond scum, a good multi vitamin, and fish oil.

Glad you found the answer for your daughter, although pond scum sounds not so appealing! Better she get natural stuff that works for her than some mind altering chemicals. You are right, psych drugs are some nasty stuff.

Hi to all!!!
I keep several bags of frozen fruit, and will make a smoothie if the kids are sick, and add some of my "cold tincture", which by itself is bitter. Frozen fruit smoothies hide the taste of anything.

Hi, everyone. We went to my daughter's to visit for a day and intercept youngest son. School's out for Christmas. We went to Arlington's German Christmas Market and had lunch with the amazing Em and her mom! It rained until we bought an umbrella.

Just as we were leaving the market, daughter got a txt from my sil. He told her about the shooting. It turns out he went to college with one of the sisters of the shooter. He's devasted and was glued to the news when we got back. Daughter and sil both are getting worried about sending Em to school in a couple of years. So are we.

He tried to txt her, but got a thanks for thinking about us, but we have no comment kind of answer. He's really worried about her. She lives down here. It's even more real when you someone connected to it.

I'm so glad you all are here too. It's such a blessing to have you all here.

TB

I am sure she is devastated and on some level embarrassed, although she has no reason to be. That is probably why her answer was so short and sweet.

It is horrible to lose your mother, but to have to deal with the fact that your brother was responsible intentionally is really just to much for me to wrap my head around, so I feel for your sil's friend.

That was the topic of conversation tonight at dinner with my sis and brother inlaw. We were talking about mandatory lockdowns at schools and how the middle and HS's here have that and I am against it. They look like prisons and my thought is that if a kid was trying to get away they couldnt. I know they do it for truency (sp??) here but if some kid brought a gun or knife to school and other students were trying to flee, they would be trapped in the schoool. The only way out is thru the admin office.

It is a shit shame that we have to worry when we send our babies off to school, what is this world coming to!

Old Guard, the smoothy sounds great, whats in your homemade remedy??

I don't know if you guys have read this, but it really struck home with me. We went through this for 2 years with our youngest daughter. We were told the same thing, no criminal charges then no help is available. Fortunately for us, the vitamin, fish oil, and super green smoothie helped her (and us).

That is sad but true. Our society seems to be reactive instead of proactive.

Remember the movie where Danny Divito was forced to live in one of his shithole bldgs for a month. (he was a slumlord)?? Well all the politicians should have to live on 30k for a year and walk in the peoples shoes before being able to take their seats in govt.

Maybe then they could see all of the govt waste and abuse and why we have no money for important stuff. Maybe then we could free up some money and get bills passed to prevent people from taking their kids to the ER cause they dont want to pay for a Dr visit and stiff the hospital for a 1200 ear infection that we the taxpayers pay for. Or the guy who needs an ingrown toenail cut out and goes to ER to do the same! Both of those were actual cases last time I was at the ER with my son last year and it was mid day on a weekday!

I dont mind helping the needy, but since when did the moochers become the needy. As a property mgr you wouldnt believe the shit I hear about and come accross. People trying to pay rent with their food stamp cc cause they get way more than they use, so they trade it for stuff. They take people grocery shopping and pay for the stuff and get the value of the groceries in cash from the people less 10%, which they then go buy beer or take the wife out for a nice dinner and movie. Sorry but that just pisses me off.

Just think of the money that could be saved if they would look outside the box and treat mental issues, or basic healthcare issues. It boggles my mind that as a country, we have allowed this to become "normal".

Exactly. If every person who got a low rate student loan as a medical student, nurse, radiology etc..was required to put in some time at a medical cntr for those who are not insured to either pay on a sliding scale or pay nothing, we could use some of those bldgs that our govt now owns due to foreclosures, retrofit them and save millions for taxpayers. Just like a surgery center will do ENT on mondays, gastro stuff on tuesdays, etc.. they could do the same and give back to the community and have a lower rate loan or some of the loan forgiven, its not like they pay them off anyway, we the taxpayers get stiffed ALOT on student loans, I know, I run credit on potential tenants. They should be required to do so or the license to practice is suspended. Not saying like for a year every day, more like for a year once a week. All the money saved could go to a more proactive medical community and focus on keeping people healthy instead of waiting until they are sick. In addition, Obamacare wouldnt be needed and companies would start hiring again.

I agree. As a small business, our largest expense (after cost of goods sold) is insurance. You would think the insurance companies could see the logic in backing this up.

Hope your having success in your Christmas shopping SO. We drove to Ga on Thursday, high winds, rain, felt like the world was going to end at some points! It took us 10 hours instead of the usual 8 due to the weather and driving conditions, but we made it safely.

It is COLD here! I am not used to this 20something sort of weather, and with the high gusty winds it just cuts right thru clothing and chills to the bone.

Today we did grocery shopping and made cookies and dinner for tonight, where did the day go! Have to finish up my milano cookies tomorrow (the chocolate dipping part) and do the chocolate chips. I just ran out of steam today. Flopped onto the couch and gonna catch up with glp

Have 2 presents under the tree for each family member, then it's a prepaid visa for the youngest and the foster daughter. They love to shop and this way they can buy whatever strikes their fancy during the post holiday sales.

Grocery shopping is tomorrow ~ it's our turn to host family dinner on Christmas Eve for my immediate family. Prime rib and baked potatoes are all I have to do. Easy Peasy.

We had the high winds and rain in our area too, snow fell on the mountains though. Like a foot in 26 hours!

Got a picture text from the oldest in Missouri, it's cold and snowy there. It's funny with being on a Military base and having people there from around the country. What seems like a blizzard to her is normal to others. Our schools get closed with 2" of snow on the ground here. Guess she will be learning more about serious winter weather and driving conditions. Thank goodness she lives in base housing and works on the base.

The cookies sound wonderful. We do cinnamon rolls for our neighbors. Make them up on Christmas Eve so they can bake them Christmas morning. It's an easy recipe (I will post it on the recipe thread) and we have made them for so many years I can do it in my sleep!

Were doing prime rib too. I never did that before, usually its turkey and ham, sometimes roast pork, but Pete wanted filet minion until he saw the price, than he said, how bout prime rib. The only thing we always have is mashed potatoes. My kids love them so I never get to change up the potato dish

It must a beef kind of Christmas! We're having a roast, too. We're not having our Christmas until the 29th because daughter has to work until the 28th and they won't be in town until very late. Then, we're having ham and fixin's at the hotel. The kids want to go swimming and hubs has to work later that night.

Sorry I haven't checked in for awhile. I've been kind of in the dumps, but all is working out for the best now. It's nice to have youngest son home for a little while. He'll go back with daughter after New Year's to catch the train back to school. I wish we had Amtrak here. I LOVE trains!

And, before you all say anything, I'm NOT cooking like a fiend, like last year!LOL Super simple!

Glad your taking it easy TB. Sounds like you will have the family around even if its not all on Christmas. Its the spirit of Christmas not the day that makes it special. Hope you enjoy both your days.

Its nice to be able to spend some time with each of the kids without feeling pulled in two directions so the few days you get your son alone is probably a good thing.
