Hi Nine's...looks like you solved a mystery of the strange post. I'm trying to scroll back to page 130, so I can see what the heck this was.

That's the good thing about Texas. We get all kinds of stuff from Central and South America in the winter. I've never had trouble with it either.

Speaking of gardening, I'm going to be planting peas and some root vegs in a couple of weeks. I think I'm getting my raspberries this weekend. I know where I want them and have the patch ready. I just saw the store had bare roots the other day.

That's awesome TB. We get some watermelons. Who knows where they're from. They're never ripe this time of year though. Just pink, flavorless, and not worth buying.

I envy you being able to start some things already. Are you doing container gardening this year? When you plant your raspberries, hope you know to plant them where you won't mind new shoots popping up all over. Great for making new plants. Not so great if it's a place you don't want them. They have a real zest for life and determination to match it.

I'm not doing containers this year. They didn't work out last year. Right now, I'm trying to come up with a good way to shade the garden without it blowing away.

The raspberries I know how to do. Gram had a patch for years and then we got half and my uncle got half. We had them for a long time. I'm just hoping they don't fry like everything else here lately. I love raspberries! Gram used to make jell from hers and when we moved to my parent's house, we had red currant bushes. She used to have me pick them to put with the raspberries. It was the BEST jell! I don't know if currants will grow here. I'll have to order them if I want to try.

Yeah, seems like they need a lot of water to keep them going. Shade cloth might work in your garden. You could drive some short posts in and put velcro on the post and the cloth to attach it. They have it real reasonable on ebay sometimes. It's not trimmed like the farm supply stores, but it's not the price of farm supply stores either and it doesn't take anything to sew a hem. It's just as good as the kennel shade cloth covers.

I love raspberries too. If they have a lot of early spring water they produce a lot for most of the summer. I freeze mine with sugar, then thaw and pour cream over it in the winter. Yum.

I have a partial roll of weed fabric that was given to me that I thought I would use as shade fabric. I saw a show on PBS that demonstrated how it doesn't work as weed blocker. That stuff is a real fail! I'm just trying to decide how to put it up, which direction, temporary or permanent, that sort of thing. I've been reading a thread on pvc building things, so that got me thinking about it more.

You're so creative. Can't wait to see what you come up with. Wouldn't the weed block increase the heat though? I used it one year and it worked ok, but cleaning it up after harvest was something else. You have to tack it to the ground to keep the wind from blowing it and ripping out the plants, but it still gets loose in some places. Then, at the end of the season, pulling it out was enough to lengthen your arms. Made me feel like I had orangutan arms getting that stuff up and I still see bits of it here and there. It was great though for starting early seeds because it held the warmth in.

I think I'm going to make something like a canopy with it, but I want to be able to move it around to block different directions. That's where the pvc will come in. I'm not sure if I have enough to do what I'm thinking of, though.

Yeah, but it won't be super tall, so that should help. I'm still working it out in my mind, so I can't explain it well. I may just make fence-like panels out of it. If it's about 3 or 4 ft. tall, that might work. I have an old, ratty camo net I can use over top, too.

Sounds like you have a great idea. Let us know how it works out. The way things are looking this might be the year we're real happy for anything we can grow. Would be nice to have a preview and see if we're going to have drought or flood this year.
