Hurricane Irene Linked to comet Elnin

I am reading comments here and there from the net that the severity and activity of Irene is being linked not only to the moon but the presence of comet Elnin nearing earth. I don't see the connection. The comet is not close enough nor will be. Am I missing something. Would enjoy some insight thanks.
