I keep hearing idgits say that the US is a democracy! FOOLS! Quoting: Chip For some reason, rightwingers love to say this. Hogwash! America is a representative DEMOCRACY. If it wasn't a DEMOCRACY I wouldn't be voting, right? We're not a direct DEMOCRACY but we are a DEMOCRACY, thank god (and no thanks to rightwingers). We're a republic and a DEMOCRACY. A democracy is mob rule, where the majority tell the minority what they can and can't do, so no, we live in a republic. AUTHOR: Benjamin Franklin (1706–90) QUOTATION: “Well, Doctor, what have we got—a Republic or a Monarchy?” “A Republic, if you can keep it.” ATTRIBUTION: The response is attributed to BENJAMIN FRANKLIN—at the close of the Constitutional Convention of 1787, when queried as he left Independence Hall on the final day of deliberation—in the notes of Dr. James McHenry, one of Maryland’s delegates to the Convention. I hear that quote frequently. If Franklin were alive today I imagine him saying something such as this: "What the hell is the matter with you people?! Not only did you not keep it, you pissed on it! You pissed on it one-thousand ways and still have the audacity to celebrate the Day of Independence?! You had nothing to do with it and you have done nothing to maintain it! As a tireless proponent of Liberty and Freedom I utter these words in the manner I now see so often on your Internet.....REPUBLIC? FAIL!" in warm pursuit... |

I can't speak for him, but believe it it or not, I'm a direct descendant of Franklin and it's my opinion he would by appalled by some aspects of the nation and thrilled with others. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward I can't speak for him, but believe it it or not, I'm a direct descendant of Franklin and it's my opinion he would by appalled by some aspects of the nation and thrilled with others. It would be very interesting to be a descendant of Franklin. I'm sure that would provide you with considerable awareness and insight and I find that you have made a fair statement. However, could we not say the very same about any good man from the beginning of time? I cannot imagine any other reaction, can you? Who would not marvel at the advancements in travel, science, and communications and yet still be appalled by the capacity that governments have to immure, indenture, and destroy? To the original point of a Republic as an ideal government, I believe your great great-great-great-great-grandfather had similar notions; that a Republic was a gift to an enlightened people and that that this Republic required Social tolerance, political restraint, economic thrift, justice of virtue, and a philosophical understanding of that gift bolstered by a perennial thirst for maintaining independence from the arms of an overreaching government. The fact remains; today the Republic is non-existent for U.S. Citizens. They do not administer their own affairs as instead they allow popularity contests to determine who will establish and dictate their affairs for them. They do not maintain a spirit of independence or philosophical understanding of such as they line up to register, apply, and submit in the great gathering of government goodies and "protections" in countless forms. They do not exercise political restraint as they allow government to encroach into every aspect of their personal lives. They do not exercise social tolerance or seek a justice of virtue as they seek endless statutes to establish what is deemed acceptable And They do not practice economic thrift as they have turned over the treasury to a private bank who prints monopoly money and calls it real. in warm pursuit... |
