Central TX: "So Hot, FIres Are Starting Themselves!"
[link to www.kxan.com]

"Spontaneous Combustion" is occurring.
One of my friends had to put out a fire with his shirt for stranded motorist.

(I'm new at this so forgive me if the post doesn't turn out right.)

It was 112f today, which tied the record for hottest day EVER here in Austin, TX.

According to the news, it may be even hotter tomorrow and the electrical grid for the state is stretched too thin already. They even are suggesting for their heavy electric users to consider closing shop.

Seriously, big old oak trees and stuff are crashing down and water mains are breaking from the ground buckling. Not only is Austin on a major "dormant" fault, but oil and gas pipelines criss-cross it. Imagine if something like that breaks. The springs are all flowing at 50% of the avg.

I left for a month to go somewhere cooler (which ended up being 100f), and on driving in across Arkansas and through Dallas, I was appalled at the severity of the drought. I was actually scared by it. It is actually upsetting, and depressing.

One of the people monitoring the springs said that archaeological evidence suggests the springs have been flowing continually for 16,000 years, so if it dries up at this point, it is SERIOUS DOOM for the rapidly growing central Texas population.

On top of that Ranchers have been having to sell their cattle for slaughter, because of the drought, and lack of grass for them to graze on. 750,000 sold. Beef prices are going to rise sharply, as well as many other commodities because of their interconnectedness.

There's just way too many people here, dependent on the Edwards and Trinity Aquifer. It's tragic, because this is one of the few places in the country where the economy is still doing pretty good...and the water is very likely to dry up. Then water will be more precious than gasoline...(try telling that to the Chinese financed frackers of the newly discovered oil fields on the southwest edge of the aquifer.) Before they built all the dams, there were NO LAKES in Texas.

I tried growing a garden this year, and all I got was a handful of tomatoes, my tomato plants are pretty much cooked. But the basil loves it somehow.

My father who has a farm in western oklahoma says there isn't enough moisture in the ground to even plant wheat.

If major doom doesn't happen from space, you might at least want to buy food now, while it's still available.

Everyone probably thinks I'm nuts, but I lined my back window with aluminum foil. It has helped with my ac efficiency.

I could conserve energy by cooking on my dash with aluminum foil? I only have a few weeks worth of food, I pick up extra cans when I get groceries, and have rice and beans, and several containers of water. I think if something like this happened and progressed to a shortage of water, I would flee back home to family in Michigan, with a well..

Rain is coming.

The peak of hurricane season is on us. Maybe we will see more frequent dousings from the Gulf. A few tropical storms that don't flood much would be ideal.

Tis true, and scary as hell. I live in Austin as well and have heard several times on the news on the radio that the drought is expected to last through the winter and into next summer. I don't know how they can know such a thing, but that is the prediction.

Also, there are at least 12 Texas towns that are due to run out of water within the next 90 days (heard that on the news tonight). Some towns have already had to truck bottled water in for residents to drink. Obviously, that is not sustainable. And, if this drought keeps up, I could see a mass exodus from Texas. It's really scary - no joke.

fires "spontaneously" start outside because the the suns rays go through broken glass and put focused heat on a specific extremely dry area- like how a person can start a fire with a magnifying glass. Just one more reason why littering is bad.

Shouldn't that lower prices since they've been sold to slaughter which should cause an increase of beef on the grocery shelves (so to speak), lowering prices?
