They are 3d holographic projectors, gunning images upon the Earths radiation belt.

These things have amazing graphic images and are very convincing even when using telescopes.

But have flaws as well. They periodically go on and off line, or get rebooted. If you are lucky, you will catch these computer glitches in action. Sometimes the stars quickly jump scenes or freeze frame.
