Pentagon pays $720M in late fees for storage containers
The Pentagon has spent more than $720million since 2001 on fees for shipping containers that it fails to return on time, according to data and contracts obtained by USA TODAY.

The containers — large metal boxes stowed on ships and moved from port on trucks — are familiar sights on bases in Iraq and Afghanistan where troops use them for storage, shelter and building material. Yet each 20-foot container returned late can rack up more than $2,200 in late fees. Shipping companies charge the government daily "container detention fees" after the grace period ends for the box to be returned.

The endless pit of spending... but I agree there could be some nefarious purpose.

The Pentagon would rather pay $500/month in rent plus the late fees.

Using borrowed money, of course.

You are forgetting the army of bureaucrats that fill out all the logistical paperwork for the procurement of said boxes.

In fact I would argue it's not the cost of the box that's important, it's the 6 paper pushers necessary to get the box, deliver it, keep it, use it, and then return it late and another to process the late fees.

Sounds like a good trail starter for a lot of lost / improperly tracked containers, several of which may have just been parked with megaton warheads ready to blow...

Or any number of other possibilities, including nothing more than government wasting money by not renewing a lease.

Talk about fraud waste and abuse. You can buy brand new ones for around $5K and used ones from $2-3.5K easily online alone. I imagine if bought in bulk you get them super cheap. Unless of course your a government contractor.

Re: Pentagon pays $720M in late fees for storage containers
From what I've learned about these, it IS cheaper to pay the fees for them or buy them, than it is to send them back to the country of origin...

So they pay a LOT, but it's cheaper that way. I know some may not see this nor understand it, but it's a fact.
It would cost about 6500.00 to send back an empty 5000.00 container. So that's why they do it. It IS cheaper to send them back if they are full, because the cost is spread out with the contents. But sending them empty is VERY expensive.
I love physics. It bonds us eternally, it's what makes our computers work, it's what's in my morning cup of coffee, it's the thing that keeps the universe from vanishing due to lack of belief...

yep... that's a lot of late fee charges.. And why would the owners of the containers not auction the contents off? what they would do normally.. be interesting to find out who owns the storage containers..sounds like a money laundering scam.

LOL. Gee I wonder who owns the container company and who's responsible for making the containers arrive late. All it takes is two to tango millions of dollars out of the taxpayers pocket.
