Can I sue the local sheriff's office for slander?
The reason I ask is because one of my friends was over at my house last week hanging out and we had a few beers. Well after he left my house, a local sheriff's deputies followed him half way across town and then pulled him over. The deputy then started asking him why he was over at my house and what were we doing. Well he told her what I told you and she called him a liar, and said that the only reason he would be at my house was to buy or sell drugs and told him that my house was a knowen major drug oporation. His wife showed up about half way through the ordeal and she was told the same thing. And I DON'T SELL DRUGS, never have never will. I don't fuck around and do any drugs I do smoke some weed but even if I got raided worst case for me is spend the night in jail and a misdemeanor possession charge.

This is not the first time that I have heard them talking about me I live in a small town of about 400 people and word travels fast around here. All it boils down to is that I do smoke pot and they are pretty much harassing me about, yet I could point you to a few meth labs that they won't do anything about. They have gotten on my last nerve, its not like Im out getting drunk smoking meth stealing or tearing up peoples property, which happens a lot around here. I come home and go to work thats pretty much it. I got nothing to hide I would let them come search my house if it would get them off my back but I doubt it will, is there any thing I can do?

Re: Can I sue the local sheriff's office for slander?
Short answer to your question in the title.. No.

A little bit more informative answer:
If you live in a small town, it is best that you keep your habits to yourself. Even if you think so-and-so is real "tight" with you, they also have someone they are real "tight" with who they could tell.. you get the picture. Also, how old are you OP? If I were to guess, based on your post, I would say 19-22.

wrong, you can sue anybody for anything, it is a matter of wether or not you can win, and if you win do you really win. But yes if you want to sue. sue them personally. not as police officers. Their suit will not be covered by the city and they will have to shell out their own money for attorneys.

This may be some of the most ignorant advice on the internet. Do you have the slightest idea how our legal system is?

OP, you sound like a whiny baby. Maybe, you shouldnt be smoking pot if you dont want to be looked upon as a druggie? Just a thought to throw out there.

Secondly, to sue, you would have to find a lawyer to work the case, that wont laugh you out of his/her office. Good luck with that, considering you are clearly broke and desparately seeking money.

All in all, get a life, or a job. If you cant work, go to school. Make yourself more employable.. oh and that means put the pipe down.

I have a job and have had a job since I was 14, and Im far from being broke or desperate for money. Secondly Im not worried about being called a druggie because I smoke a little pot, what I do mind is being called a drug dealer, a meth cooker, and a tweeker, because I am none of those things. I have never done meth never will that shit is trash and will fuck up your life, Im not a fucking moron.

WOW! What a dumbshit ignoramous! Marijuana helps cure and prevent many known cancers and you equate it with doing drugs, are you daft?

Lety me guess you think drinking a liter of liquor on Friday is just fiiine but someone smokes a healthy herb with anticancerous and anti-mutagenic protective effect is a horrible druggie. Yeah keep telling yourself that and stick to your cancerous toxic prescription medicines and your striated liver.

The above poster has to be one of the most ignorant fools I have ever heard.

Re: Can I sue the local sheriff's office for slander?
If I engaged in illegal drug use I would probably not want to get the sheriff's attention with a slander lawsuit.

Granted it might be slander and that might be illegal, but you are doing something illegal yourself.

Slightly hypocritical on your part to bring the sheriff's department up on charges when you are doing something just as bad and illegal.

Just as bad NO definately NOT. He is not doing anything to anyone else by choosing to partake in Marijuana (actually he is protecting himself from cancer)
Illegal, yes. As bad as what the cops are doing? Definitely NOT!

You know what, get caught with weed, go tell the judge "But your honor, I was simply protecting myself from cancer" and see how far that gets you.

I've seen 10x the amount of research on marijuana and synthetic cannibinoid interacters than you will ever dream of. But hey, if you wanna take some guy on the internet who has long hair, no job and lives with mommy's word, that's your choice.

Sorry that this is happening to you OP. There's probably not much you can do but chalk it up to living in a small Texas town where everyone knows everyone's business with an unfortunate amount of exaggeration thrown in for good measure.

P.S. I can tell that you live in Texas because you said you were "Fixing to" I think that us Texans are the only ones who say that!

Try to gather as much evidence as possible and talk to an internal affairs officer.

Re: Can I sue the local sheriff's office for slander?
I'm serious about the Internal affairs "OP" I went to the internal affairs once over some really old barney fife mother fucker in Memphis,Tn. who harrassed me once. I was so pissed I took a bus in the rain clear across town to get to down town Memphis and I even walked a mile after the bus in the rain to get to the internal affairs building. The cop got suspended without pay for 2 weeks for what he did to me,but if you want more friends and to discuss your rights you can also go to an "ACLU" representative and discuss your American freedoms. Here's a link to find out more about the "ACLU"
