...and another 4.4 at 21 km depth
 Quoting: drummy 3573926

Seems a 4.4 is the biggest intensity this island can have, that is the 3rd or 4th one of that size now.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4632828

Have faith...this size of quake has tied the largest quake recorded at Hierro in the past 7 years. (No records I can find to go back further)

It was a 5.1 that sent Mount Saint Helens off...we're not far from that!
 Quoting: Idgits

I Been searching myself for days for history, lot of people seem to expect a 5,6,7 earthquake before a landslide but enough of these could also do it. I am going to mail emsc see if they can put some more info on the geology of the island.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4632828

Oh yeah. Helen's precursor was a 4.5 I believe...the following day the 5.1 hit. Hierro has had almost 11,100 quakes in 3 months. LOTS of deformation occurring, lots of magma chambers opening up. There's no telling how much has actually moved with all this activity. A few more of these 4.0+ quakes, and we're going to see some major events unfold in the Canaries.

en la fuga de Gorreta ha habido un desprendimiento importante, se oían caer piedras grandes
There was a landslide in ‘La Fuga de Gorreta’, they could hear great rocks falling somoen in AVCAN-FB says

They also speak of damage in the Tunnel of Rosquillos

Agree with you not looking good, All I found so far is that the last landslide was caused by a series of quakes not one big one which could be happening right now again. Without anyone clued up on the geology of the island though we all in dark really here.

4.4 - CANARY ISLANDS, SPAIN REGION - 2011-11-04 20:36
 Quoting: Idgits

People!!! Look closely...EMSC ONCE AGAIN PLACES THIS QUAKE HALF WAY BETWEEN LA PALMA AND HEIRRO!!!

I think we need to consider that EMSC is telling us more accurate information than IGN. 90% of large quakes are showing different locations on EMSC than on IGN.

[link to boulter.com]
 Quoting: Idgits

Yeah, I've noticed that every time too, but I think it's more likely that EMSC is wrong given the on site shaking reports on El Hierro.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1895541

Given the sheer size and resources that EMSC has, I'm always going to lean towards them being correct. That, and IGN has repeatedly blundered every aspect of following these events. And...they're heavily influenced by the governments in the Canaries...EMSC is not being swayed in my opinion. Lastly...the last time a big one hit, La Palma AND Gomera residents had reported feeling vibrations. If that's the case, it would have to be closer to them than the location that IGN shows it being.

That 4.4 will have caused some major deformation and a huge spike in energy accumulation...any guesses on what it jumps to? I'm thinking 2.2E+12

Currently 1.95E+12

EMSC is using their default depth of 10 km. That means they haven't being able to determine de exact depth. If they can't determine that, what makes you think the location they are giving is precise?

Just a thought, and I am sure somebody might have posted this already, but how about,if the "big landslide" of El hierro is going to be done by Haarp, then they would not worry now and it would coincide with the FEMA broadcasting, telling us to run for the hills

That smaller green one up and to the left was a 3.8 I believe from earlier. This was MUCH larger, and probably closer, as EMSC stated
 Quoting: Idgits

La Palma shows it large too...much larger than the earlier 3.8 that was near Frontera Hierro

After six hours it would reach Britain, where waves up to 40 ft high would hit southwest England at 500 miles per hour, travel a mile inland and obliterate almost everything in its path. Even Britain's more sheltered shores, in the North Sea and Irish Sea, will be struck by smaller but still significant swells, causing widespread flooding in major coastal cities.

And then on another site this...

Within 3 hours a wave, or series of waves, over 400 feet (120 metres) high will inundate the whole Bay of Biscay area, and the Southern parts of England, Ireland and Wales. The West African states as far South as Ghana will also be seriously affected by now

I am not defending IGN. But as you say, at EMSC they still haven't got accurate data on depth, so you shouldn't assume either as final the location.
Nevertheless even in the IGN map you can see how those quakes are slowly getting nearer La Palma.

Look at Tenerife's analysis...look at the area between 1-1.5 minutes...that's freaking insane!!! Look at that delay! That's a good 15 seconds between shakes...anybody understand what that might mean? I believe it means there was some sort of breaking loose and then the quake continued. Looks like considerable damage to underground chambers based on this chart.

None of the buoys are in event mode yet...doesn't look like it's spawned any type of tsunami...however, there are no immediate local buoys to determine if there was any local wave action.

Dr Day has identified dozens of volcanic vents in the Cumbre Vieja volcano that have been formed by successive eruptions over the past 100,000 years.

He thinks water trapped between dykes of impermeable rock could create pressures that eventually lead to the western flank of the mountain falling away during some future eruption. Just how much water is trapped on el hierro no one seems to know?
