IndigoGirl User ID: 1516110 United States 09/27/2011 04:53 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hierro prepares for a possible evacuation of 4000 persons. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2130523 [link to www.elpais.com] [link to www.libertaddigital.com] Yes I see it here also. "About 300 people will be evacuated this evening cores Frontera, El Hierro, at the risk of landslides by seismic activity, according to Television Canaria. Se trata de algunos residentes en los siguientes núcleos: Las Puntas, Sabinosa, Pozo de la Salud y Pie de Risco." "Although among the GPS measuring equipment is detected that the island "has swelled about four inches." With the rise of magma in the subsurface, the ground expands." The president of the Cabildo de El Hierro, Alpidio Armas, and the Minister of Security and Emergency Area, Maria del Carmen Morales, have appeared before the media on Sunday, September 25, to convey a message of calm and security to the population. Main reason, the strongest earthquake so far (Magnitude 3.4 at a depth of 15 km).' [link to www.earthquake-report.com] I wonder if they're feeling a bit foolish now??? |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1542735 United States 09/27/2011 06:11 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Not to be a total ass, as people will probably be injured/killed if/when this thing goes off....BUT. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1537654 I am going to guess the 29th of September as the day that it pops. Doubling pressure...got to be close now. 29th is my guess. at what point in the energy accumulation do volcanoes normally go off? I don't have any formal training, so if there is a textbook answer, which I would doubt that there is (imho), I would not know. I would say that wherever the most pressure accumulates against the most unstable part of the structure of the volcano, would be the breaking point. I don't know what the strata of that area is so I can only speculate. My hunch says the 29th though...just a feeling about it. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1805549 09/27/2011 08:03 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I think the answer is relative to what sort of earth lies above the volcano and the depth. To help narrow it down this is a basaltic volcano and Hierro is doubled enery accumulation in just 5 days. The radiation absorption of the sun was spiked for some time too as pointed out by IWTB76 |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1625576 09/27/2011 10:42 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If I understand this correctly...there's been 1250% increase in energy accumulation since July 19th. AND there's been a 230% increase in energy accumulation in the PAST 4 DAYS!!! That's how much energy is waiting to escape. These are measured in jules. I have no idea how much power this actually equals out too. |

Geos User ID: 586866 United States 09/27/2011 11:08 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This volcano is awake, no doubt! Here's a bit of info on the volcano from a book I have: Prevalent activity: avalanches and fumaroles. - Thought to be the top of a shield volcano that stands on the ocean floor at a depth of 12,140 to 13,125 feet! - Located right above a "hot spot". - Several rifts and fractures riddle the volcano. - El Hierro has the largest concentration of eruptable vents. "The very wide depressions of El Julan to the southwest, Las Playas to the southeast and El Golfo to the north, continue onward several miles into the open sea. These depressions are composed of basins bordered by slopes in large part underwater and are believed to be the result of enormous avalanches from the volcanic structure." Then it goes onto mention there is water trapped inside the volcano,... like La Palma! Last Edited by Geos on 09/27/2011 11:11 PM |
