Best El Hierro Thread On GLP - Canary Islands - ACTIVITY HAS RETURNED - AGAIN! | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 18849631 United Kingdom 06/30/2012 12:54 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | reposting this gif, look at el golfo. what is left of what slipped into the sea thousands of years ago is left on top of the island. when el julan is superimposed on top, it's an almost perfect match, bar ONE rather large thing. that's all solidified rifting magma by the way, or to be more precise, the el julan cliffs.. [link to 2.bp.blogspot.com] even the angle of the drop into the sea is identical. |

If it keeps going like this for the next few hours, the next GPS datapoints will help us understand what is going on. If we’ll have apparently accelerated inflation it might mean that the magma chamber is full. [link to volcanocafe.wordpress.com] |

It is either caused by magma lifting the crust, magma entering a functioning magma chamber, through layered infusion of magma, or creation of a magma chamber. The last is by far the noisiest with regards to earthquakes. Per see there is nothing such as a “full magma chamber”. If it is filled with magma and magma keeps coming in it will either fracture and grow, or if the pressure increases beyond the threshold of the magma chambers roof, an eruption till occur. In this case it is mot likely a layered fracturisation creating a new layered magma chamber. This is likely happening due to the other two pre-existing chambers being allready filled up. They have now put in a link to the actual GPS data points regarding El Hierro from all (or almost) stations. Now we can see what is moving in x,y,z coordinates. This is really good! Thank you for this from Volcano Café. [link to www.ign.es] [link to volcanocafe.wordpress.com] |

They're forming a definite line, fleeing from the ridges where the majority seemed to be concentrating since this started [link to www.ign.es] Last week [link to www.ign.es] All the quakes since this new phase started [link to www.ign.es] Now...take a look at this! This is the total of all the quakes that have occurred since July of last year. This new area on the south west tip of Hierro that is red and blue is experiencing the first real episode of focused quake epicenters. I believe this is telling and that this is indicating where things are going to be heading from here on out. [link to www.ign.es] I believe the magma chambers or possibly even the tectonics of this island are changing. This new area is seeing quakes for the first time in a year. The area has not seen quakes in either the last eruptive phase or this seismic phase. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 18854754 Portugal 06/30/2012 03:10 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Carl le Strange says: June 30, 2012 at 18:40 What we are seeing is how much and how fast the ground is deforming as magma pushes into the forming magma chamber. It shows that 18 kilometers of rock has moved both five centimeters upwards, and five centimeters to the east, and 1 centimeter to the north in only five days. And that is very fast motion for this type of volcano, and for magma at that large depth. Data like this is really good when one can read them accuratly. For the rest of us plotted data maps like those Lurking does is doing wonders to explain what is happening. And Lurking can not do those without getting the data. So, we are happy that we now get the data that we need. [link to i49.tinypic.com] [link to volcanocafe.wordpress.com] |

Quoting: Idgits [link to www.emsc-csem.org] A 5.8 in the south Atlantic ocean. It's really not that far from the Canaries...it's more like Mid-Atlantic. And...it's DIRECTLY on the convergence of the two plates. Related? Very possibly in my opinion. I think with all of the action (subduction in the Marianna trench and the North American plate pushing on Japan) going on for the past couple of decades in the Pacific Basin there will action in the Atlantic basin. What it is we'll just have to see. Last Edited by dschis1000 on 06/30/2012 03:12 PM |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 18854754 Portugal 06/30/2012 04:43 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Update 30/06 – 20:02 UTC - Since 07:20 UTC HT has stopped and only earthquakes are still happening. Strong enough to talk about a continuing process. - 116 earthquakes since midnight today - Er always is always looking to improve his website and to inform his readers the best possible way. Since we have programmed our earthquake database and linked I Have Felt It forms, we are trying to optimize the output. Until today we are using our realtime earthquakes database for our daily major and complete earthquake lists, our Worldwide Earthquake lists and for our Email notification service. While following the El Hierro eruption, we also would liked to be informed about the earthquakes on El Hierro. As we had programmed a Spain-Only earthquake list and not too much earthquakes are happening in Spain, we had not too many other earthquakes to deal with. Other areas in the world make a different story. To avoid such overlapping, we have now created an example of what should become a “Worldwide Volcano earthquakes” page. As an example, we have created a list for El Hierro, La Palma and Tenerife. We have limited the scope of the location to the surroundings of the volcano. An Email Earthquake Notification subscription is possible for every list. Same principle as discussed below. You can subscribe to as many lists as you would like. Try to avoid overlapping lists.
