It appears to be moderating... or at least starting to throttle.

It's also changing faster than I can keep up with in my plots. Since I grabbed the graphic and did the translation, it picked back up in rate.

This map shows the most recent water temperatures...doesn't seem to be any new fluctuations indicating any underwater eruptions. Remember...we went through all of this before and noted that if any undersater eruptions were occurring we would see a significant rise in water temperatures. It isn't happening here! Also...even if the magma was close to the surface but not yet erupting, we would still see local temperatures rising.

Looking from Tenerife, there has been a massive ship out to sea all day. Now all lit up, just wondering if they are monitoring. All ships we usually see are passing by but this has been out there at least 12hrs now.

Thank you for this link, Idgits. Considering all the links I've looked at, somehow I managed to miss this one along the way.

The Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has raised to yellow the alert for high temperatures expected tomorrow, Tuesday 11th October 2011 for temperatures over 36 degrees Celsius in the Canary Islands. The alert will remain active between 10.00 and 19.00, will mainly affect mountainous areas. Temperatures of up to 36 degrees will affect the islands of Gran Canaria (high areas, east, south and west coasts) and Tenerife (La Orotava and Vilaflor, east, south and west coasts), while 34 degrees is expected in Gran Canaria (north), Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma (west) and Tenerife (north coast).

No problem, Keep up the good work though..

It looks like this is a new pattern. Hierro has been going in steady patterns.

Looking back at the past weeks ... some thoughts:

1. The authorities and scientists don't really seem to know what they talk about, making in the best of cases educated guesses. They had put the possibility of an eruption at just a 15%, and it has happened. Either they are incompetent, where lying, or simply fail to recognise that the state of science doesn't enable to give any sort of prediction. Seems you can get the same results by looking into a crystal ball.


2. The authorities and scientists have being constantly repeating that people had nothing to fear about, they would warn in advance if any changes happened in the situation. They didn't. It seems to have been local fishermen. Hours passed without an official statement. They are just too slow, for those of you expecting the tsunami doom, you can't expect to be warned in advance, by the time they have finished checking the data and decide to do anything hours could have passed.

Please tell your wife, from one female to another, I understand how she feels. However, you are providing a place/thread that is factual and hard to come by elsewhere.

Maybe if you haven't already done so, you could involve her a little more. If you have, let her know how much we appreciate her lending you to us at the time.

Bernard A. Chouet (born 1945) is a geophysicist who specializes in volcanic seismology. He discovered that volcanic eruptions could be predicted by observing the frequency of certain seismic waves that are generated by volcanoes.

Prediction of volcanic eruptions

Since 1977, Chouet’s colleague Keiiti Aki had been developing mathematical models of magma-filled fractures in volcanoes, in order to determine what seismic waves would be produced by such fractures.[2] Since 1985 Chouet himself had also been developing models of such fractures.[3] The turning point in Chouet’s research occurred in 1986, when Chouet examined the seismic records of the 1985 eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano in Colombia.[4] In the seismic records, he found that so-called “B-type events” or “long-period events” had occurred with increasing frequency prior to the eruption. (“Long-period events” are the records of seismic waves that are produced by volcanic fluids surging through fissures in a volcano — a phenomenon similar to water hammer.) Chouet then used the occurrence of long-period events to predict the 1989 and 1990 eruptions of Mount Redoubt in Alaska and the 1993 eruption of Galeras in Columbia.[5][6] In 2000, Mexican officials used Chouet’s methods to predict the eruption of Popocatépetl in Mexico. Water Hammer;

Water hammer (or, more generally, fluid hammer) is a pressure surge or wave resulting when a fluid (usually a liquid but sometimes also a gas) in motion is forced to stop or change direction suddenly (momentum change). Water hammer commonly occurs when a valve is closed suddenly at an end of a pipeline system, and a pressure wave propagates in the pipe. It may also be known as hydraulic shock.

This pressure wave can cause major problems, from noise and vibration to pipe collapse. It is possible to reduce the effects of the water hammer pulses with accumulators and other features.

Rough calculations can be made either using the Joukowsky equation,[1] or more accurate ones using the method of characteristics.
