Volcanic Winter Imminent? Alert Level Raised - Tambora Volcano, Indonesia.
Tambora Volcano

Current Status : Level 2 Alert (out of maximum 4) as of 5 April, 2013.

Mount Tambora is an active stratovolcano, also known as a composite volcano, on the island of Sumbawa, Indonesia. Tambora volcano has erupted three times in recorded history. These eruptions occured in 1967, 1880, 1812-15.

An eruption in 1815 is estimated as scale 7 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI), making it one of the largest explosive events in the world in the past 10,000 years. An estimated 160 cubic km of material was ejected.

Most deaths from the eruption were from starvation and disease, as the eruptive fallout ruined agricultural productivity in the local region. The death toll was at least 71,000 people (the most deadly eruption in recorded history), of whom 11,000–12,000 were killed directly by the eruption.

The 1815 eruption began on 5th April with rumblings and small pyroclastic emissions. The main 24 hour long paroxysm occurred on 10th April, 1815. At about 7 p.m. on 10 April, the eruptions intensified. Three columns of flame rose up and merged. The whole mountain was turned into a flowing mass of "liquid fire". Pumice stones of up to 20 centimetres (7.9 in) in diameter started to rain down at approximately 8 p.m., followed by ash at around 9–10 p.m. Hot pyroclastic flows cascaded down the mountain to the sea on all sides of the peninsula, wiping out the village of Tambora. Loud explosions were heard until the next evening. The ash veil had spread as far as West Java and South Sulawesi.

Aerosols from the Tambora eruption blocked out sunlight. The sky remained dark for 1-2 days up to 600 km from the volcano. Pumice islands, up to several kilometres long, drifted along the coast of Flores. Global temperatures dropped by 3 deg C. Europe missed a summer, and India had crop failures following the Tambora eruption. The eruption created a phenomenon known as a "volcanic winter."

1816 became known as the "Year Without a Summer" because of the effect on North American and European weather. Agricultural crops failed and livestock died in much of the Northern Hemisphere, resulting in the worst famine of the 19th century.

Before the eruption, Tambora had a 1400-1500m relative hight summit cone, sitting on a lava shield, giving an absolute height of 4300m. The cone lost 1400m in height during the 1815 eruption.

Update: 31/08/2011
Tambora volcano in Indonesia has been raised to level 2 alert (out of maximum 4) after an increase in volcanic earthquakes. In April 2011 there were 37 shallow volcanic earthquakes recorded, 167 in May, 277 in June, 363 in July, and 141 from 1-29 August. Continuous tremor was recorded on 29 and 30 August.

Update: 04/09/2011
The Indonesian government has requested that local administrations remain on the alert for severe risks of volcanic eruptions, as the number of volcanoes showing abnormal activity continues to rise.

As of Friday, activity in 22 volcanoes was categorized as above normal, with six at alert level three and 16 at level two. Volcano status ranges from level one, which is normal, to four, which is the highest alert.

The Volcanology and Geophysical Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) raised the status of Papandayan, one of the major tourist destinations in Garut, West Java, to alert level three on Friday.

If Papandayan erupts, it would impact 171,744 people living in the five subdistricts and 20 villages.

Update: 09/09/2011
Tambora volcano in Indonesia has been raised to level 3 alert (out of maximum 4) on 8th September.

On 6-7 September continuous tremor was recorded at the volcano. On 7th September there were 40 shallow volcanic earthquakes. A 3-km exclusion zone has been placed around the volcano.

Update: 11/09/2011
Evacuation plans prepped as Mount Tambora alert level is raised.

"On August 30, we recorded seven volcanic earthquakes and since Sept. 8 the frequency of the quakes rose substantially, to between 12 and 16 per day,” Husnuddin, head of the West Nusa Tenggara Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), told the Jakarta Globe on Sunday.

“We still hope Mount Tambora’s alert level will not increase further. We hope we can lower the status of the volcano. Let us all pray everything will return to normal,” Husnuddin said.

The BPBD chief said a team of observers had been immediately deployed to Mount Tambora.

Abdul Haris from the Mount Tambora observatory station said the heightened alert status meant an eight kilometer exclusion zone was being imposed.

“We fear there will be toxic gas as a direct result of the increased activity,” he said.

Update: 19/09/2011
Volcanic activity at Mount Tambor reported to have decreased but residents told to remain alert.

Update: 20/09/2011
Bold farmers in Indonesia usually ignore orders to evacuate the slopes of live volcanoes, but those living on Tambora took no chances when history's deadliest mountain rumbled ominously this month.

Volcanic winter doom is one of the more serious dooms. ONE volcanic eruption (VEI8) 77,000 years ago reduced the global human population to between 1,000 and 10,000 breeding pairs. Optimistically there were maybe 50,000 people left alive on the entire PLANET.

Also, volcanic eruptions are cumulative in their effect on the climate. One VEI7 or VEI8 added to what we've already had and we could see another 99% human die-off again. Even a VEI6 added to the eruptions we've already recently had might kill off more than half of us.

The population bottleneck has always fascinated me. to imagine that we are all descended from this group of bad asses is a trip. The thought that it could happen again is even more compelling.

But that would have driven down the population even more, and quickly. They were most certainly scavengers, eating stuff that would make Bear Grylls puke.

The top of the food chain remains available for consumption the longest. The easy stuff goes first, then you work your way down to moss and the bark off trees. After that you see what's still alive and edible. That was probably people. That's probably why so few survived too - they ate everything there was to eat, ran out of non-human sources of nutrition and then, well, you do what ya gotta do.

Reminds me of when I watched that movie about the soccer team or whatever that crashed in the Andes. My significant other asked me if WE went down in the Andes, would I eat HER? I replied, 'Well, being a polite and generous gentleman, I would certainly share your legs with you.' She punched me. So I didn't mention that feeding her her legs would help keep the REST of her fresh for a while longer. ROFLMAO.

Ten thousand people were killed immediately from the pyroclastic flows and the eventual toll due to starvation and disease may have been as high as 117,000. The eruption caused a tsunami with a wave height of 10 m.
