FREE STUFF, TRICKS AND DISCUSSION TO HELP US IN THESE HARD TIMES!
POLL: In Hard Times I plan to...
Hole up, eat prepackaged foods and wait for the Zombies.
Work as hard as I can and go it alone.
Live off of others. (Stealing, looting, what have you. Your things are mine...)
Work as hard as I can and get with a good group of people.
Hide my head in the sand and pretend that nothing is happening at all.
I have a plan... It involves a bottle of Absolut and a fast drive into a concrete pillar.
 Blank (View Results)

The first rule is that a group is always stronger than a single individual, as long as everyone pulls their own weight.

Given everything, that means getting out and actually meeting people in your own area, if you live someplace with other people. It will be hard for some here, being near recluses, but not only do you need others, their going to need you.

Be choosy and don't just glom on to anyone, make sure everyone is committed to doing their share and more and willing to help others.

The first thing I have to suggest, if you haven't done it so far, is to stock up on staples.

This is cheap and if you aren't already living dead close to the bone, with a few simple tricks you can learn to cut your weekly food budget in half fast.

That would be:

Flour (by in bulk, invest in plastic or metal storage containers.)

Sugar (again, even if you think you don't need it, it will be worth the investment in how it extends the range of what you can make for yourself.)

Salt (Needed for life. Cheap. No excuse not to have it on hand.)

Oil Vegetable is cheapest, but wants a cool place for storage.

Canned meats (great if you can budget for them. Get tuna first, then the other types, for best value. Buy the cheapest brand. It will keep just as long.)

Peanut Butter (good value for return on nutrient content.)

If you shop carefully a person can have enough food from the above list to easily live for a month or more spending about fifty dollars.

If you can handle it, corn meal, the course kind, makes a tasty dish called pollenta. If you buy it in bulk, this can make a complete meal (calorie wise) for about twelve cents per person.

Anyone that's caught my rants on the subject knows that I'm a big fan of reading and think that everyone should take it up as a hobby.

Libraries are free and a lot of books can be had online that way (free) as well.

The biggest is probably Project Gutenberg, which is great for classics.

Also, if you like science fiction and fantasy, don't forget Orange Cat Publishing. (Make sure to book mark the page! A whole lot of new things are coming out soon, even though it's a bit small so far. Worth doing!)

And, just as a suggestion for self-defense, in case hiding and running away don't work for you. (Which should be your first lines of defense, after stout walls...)

Consider high test air rifles as a back-up weapon.

They are cheaper than fire arms and might just get around some local legal issues, allow for small game hunting and while not silent (the bullet will break the sound barrier after all) They can be nearly as quite as a weapon with a silencer on them.

This is just a google search on the topic, but it's a good place to start!

Obviously, we need to keep an eye on water too. Now, I doubt that everyone will suddenly lose power or water, but if it happens, being able to clean up water is a god send!

Here's one way to do it, spending a bit of cash.

At the link here we see a very simple way to remove radiation from drinking water. A bit labor intensive, but if it's work or die, you better get moving!

Wood stoves are a miracle and can make the difference between life and death if you have to ration things to get by.

Here is a site that has a lot of ideas, but don't forget to be creative!

If you can vent it properly and make sure to head good fire safety, a lot of common materials can be used to get more bang for the buck out of a fire place.

One of the big concerns I have when I think about hard times, is what to do about medicine.

Luckily I personally don't have to take anything, but I know people that do! So the link below is for them. It's a little over the top in the Armageddon part of things, but the information seems solid.

Being ready for the end still means being ready, and if you have the time, it's easier to learn to save money now, by gaining skills and basic supplies, than later.

Making your own shoes:

All right, in the main it's probably going to be cheaper to make your own nice shoes, but not regular street wear...

Until you get to the point where you simply need something on your feet and have nothing else.

Then you can scavenge a lot of free materials to use, the rubber from care tires, thick canvas from old bags and whatever else you can find.

Almost anything can be used in shoe making, there is no law that says things have to be done a specific way.

Not yet...

Here is a simple set of shoe instructions, to help you make your own.

Hand Driving a well:

In some areas, even in town, the water table isn't that far under your feet! The city may cut off your water, but you still need it to live, so having a few tricks up your sleeve may just help a bit.

This is a, well, calling it easy would be wrong, but simple and doable way, of getting a well in yourself in some parts of the world.

Remember your water filter for drinking though.

Just because a lot of hearty and hardy souls would never think of this, scrape quilting:

I know, how boring? How mundane? How like something my grandmother would have done?

Listen kids, granny had to make do through the great depression and if you have to as well, learning her tricks might just make a difference.

Once you use your clothing beyond repair, consider making something else out of them before putting them in the rag bin.

You don't have a rag bin you say?

Seriously?

Storing food that you buy in bulk while cheap, for later can save a lot of money.

Even if your not exactly the type to have a large garden already or have a limited food budget, making things yourself and saving them for later can really save money in the long run!

This is a very good web-site for information on such things.

Hydroponics:

If you have limited growing space inside and need to use window boxes in the winter, consider some of these methods.

Seeds are cheap and they grow faster in nutrient solution.

This is a comparison of several different techniques.

How to field dress an animal:

I know, ick, right?

But if it comes down to me or Bambi, or the kids (let's say the neighbors kids, since I don't have any...) going hungry, guess what's going to happen?

That's right honey, Bambi is tasty....

Um, yep. That's the plan!

But once I've crept up on the deer like a silent ninja and dispatched it with my transcendence martial arts skill, what do I do with it? (OK, once I shot it in the head. But the ninja thing sounds cooler, doesn't it?)

Then it has to be dressed and carefully, so the meat won't be contaminated.

But, you might say, there's no way your really taking down a deer, not you! Just not happening...

So you use a throwing stick or twelve and catch a bunny.

Once you get those down, the basics for all mammals will be self apparent.

There are a lot of things that live around cities that can be eaten if times get hard enough, squirrel, possum, raccoon and even rat.

Yes, some of those make me a little squeamish to think about too, but their things to eat before you have to decide it fido is a good dinner plan or not!

you might survive but you also might get diabetes aneurysms, infertility, cancer, ect. from some of those foods you reccomend unless they're organic...organic beans plus rice, or any other grain, equals proteins essential to live...fish too, jellies (organic of course can be stored for a long time so can peanut butter

Survive first.

Though I'm talking about hard times, not doomsday, a lot of the information overlaps.

Still, the idea is to make things work. If the options are starvation of maybe, possibly, in the future, coming down with a disease you probably won't get from having flour, corn or sugar, or even eating foods that aren't organic, then...

Survive first.

I can't, in good conscience, recommend that people buy organic at this time, unless they have a lot of money and are wishing to buy a good luck charm.

Organic foods do tend to be slightly "cleaner" than not, but the difference is tiny.

Not because the regular produce and meat is all that good, but because loop holes have allowed for an increasing amount of stuff to be loaded into the food supply. In some cases it's been required, even for the organic farmer.

If you have twenty dollars to spend on stocking up, don't spend it on something that costs three times more than it needs too for the hope of benefit later.

There are risks to everything, but not eating is faster than most of them.

Blacksmithing:

All right, I know, what the heck do you need to learn blacksmithing for?

The simple answer is this:

Learn to shape metal and you can make your own tools. No one can hold you hostage as easily if you have the ability to do things for yourself and once the Home Depot is closed down or too expensive for you, making your own stuff is incredibly useful.

A good smith can even make their own bolts, screws and so on.

Even if you just read over the info here, it may help you later on.

Remember though, people smithed way back, before they even had most of the high tech and modern things people will try to sell you now.

You can do it on the cheap too!

Prevent pregnancy:

When times are tough, it;s natural to seek comfort in the arms of a loved one. Or a stranger you meat in a bar.

Don't let that lead to an even greater hardship!

I'm not talking about STD's here. That's a hard one to deal with, but a separate issue.

Kids will make getting by a lot harder when funds are scarce. The little cold water cabin you can survive in if you have too isn't going to sail with the state and little junior can easily end up in a labor camp!

Oops.

I meant to say "Managed Child Rearing Facility."

Don't get pregnant and men, don't let a woman trap you that way either! Better to do without than to face a lifetime of extra hardship.

Wait to have kids until you can afford it and provide for them at least adequately.

This site has some good general information for review. Food for thought.

Crime prevention at home:

First, if allowable in your area, get a dog. A hassle? Yes. but if you train them halfway well and give them love, they will not let anyone sneak up on you at night.

Second, remember that even as things get tight, people committing crimes don't want attention. Set up a few "rattle can" lines around the parameter of your home.

Wire can be stepped over, so remember to add in the next line lower and about fourteen inches in front of the more obvious one.

This will only rattle some cans together, but the jolt of that will send a lot of people running, at least suspecting they alerted you to what was coming.

The fact that you have a preparation will frighten some away.

For the rest, well then you have a good reason to shoot without waiting to see what they want first, especially at night.

Third, have people around.

Another hassle? Mainly. But we instinctively know, no matter how foolish we are, not to take on a large group of people alone and if we know that were going to be in for a fight, we all (humanity) will go after a single person before a group.

Why? Because unless you're superman, a group of dedicated people is going to kick your butt!

*Also works on zombies.

**Remember to aim for the head.

Re: FREE STUFF, TRICKS AND DISCUSSION TO HELP US IN THESE HARD TIMES!
The Cheapest Transportation:

Walk: For cost effective travel, you can't beat it. Yes, it's harder and slower than driving a car, and no, I don't think anyone will walk more now just to save money later, even though it's a solid idea in a lot of areas.

The fact is though that you should mentally reset your mental range of how far is too far to walk to at least five miles.

That leaves you a ten mile round trip if leaving from home.

That's not too much to ask, unless you have health problems!

______________________________________________________________

Bike: A cheap one can be had on sale for a lot less than you might think.

I once picked up two fifteen hundred dollar touring bikes for a hundred dollars each. They hadn't even been used!

So check out garage sales and look at yard signs. You probably don't need much and as a bonus even someone with a basic tool kit can do a lot more on a bicycle than a car.

____________________________________________________________

Public transportation: yes, it's not that comfortable. Yes, people are annoying and it often smells, depending on local.

It's also the next cheapest way to travel in most places.

So if it comes down to the wire, buckle down and get on that bus!

*Baring zombie attack. Duh. Those things are death traps if there are Zombies about.

____________________________________________________________

A scooter or vespa:

Cost effective, and easy to use.

Yes, that's all the perks there. You'll look like a freak, at least until everyone else is walking and looking on as you zip by in envy.

That'll show them.

____________________________________________________________

Carpool, Vanpool, bumming a ride:

It works, but most people don't like the inconvenience very well. Still, if you have a community of people with common interests, sharing a ride can really work.

The trick here is making sure you use someone else' vehicle so that if the others (not you, of course!) short them on gas money and upkeep it doesn't come out of your pocket.

__________________________________________________________

Motorcycle:

Good on gas millage, poor on insurance. Might as well get a vespa unless, you know, your compensating for something...

____________________________________________________________

Small car: Tiny is good. Cheap is better. Get something old that you can repair yourself at home!

____________________________________________________________

Large car, Truck or SUV:

OK, is there a way you can drive one of these cheaply at all? Yes.

Alternative fuels.

Make your own Alcohol fuel if you have the room and you can drive fairly inexpensively.

Check out more about that here:

[link to journeytoforever.org]

____________________________________________________________

Horses and mules: Really, if you have land, their cheap enough to keep. The really high fees for horses only come when you live in a city and have to stable one.

That said...

They aren't that useful.

There, I said it. I even have four of the thing in the back yard here. Totally wasted. You can't take them on the road and unless your a trail rider for a living or make money raising and training other peoples horses, you'll never get your money back on them.

They aren't that great as pets either.

___________________________________________________________

Private Jet:
I don't have one of these in my back yard, but thought I'd add it in for color. You don't really get a lot more expensive than these, unless you buy a cruise ship to travel in.

If you can do that...

Take me with you?

More on potential DIY self-defense:

The sling shot. Not the thing David used on Goliath, but the kind Dennis the Menace never took from his pocket.

A sturdy handle, a flat but tough piece to use as a "pouch" (which should always stay as a flat piece, and fold over the projectile, to prevent catching it in the face with a carry back!)some rubber and something to shoot, which can be bolts, rocks or solid steel balls.

It takes some strength for a really powerful one, but their easily hidden and highly portable.

This video will give some information.

How to start a fire without matches:

Here I am talking about heating with wood, or other burnables (well, I will be talking about the "others" soon!)but I haven't gone into how to start a fire without matches.

This doesn't have to be some kind of huge zombie apocalypse situation. Just being poor and desperate can do the trick here!

Obviously, if you have funds now, make a point of stocking up on a few big boxes of kitchen matches, or even better, strike anywhere matches, and store them in a clean and sealed jar. This way they won't pick up moisture from the air over time and if they light, not a huge deal. The glass will get hot, but it won't light the house on fire.

But if you can't afford matches, what do you do?

Here are some very good places to start.

*Learn to make fire with a couple pieces of wood and you'll never have to do without if there are materials at all. It's a psychological thing.

(The above is a rough quote from "The Infected: Proxy" by Morgan Price. Get it free here: [link to orangecatpublishing.com] It's a really good book and the sequel comes out next month! It deserves it's own thread, but I'm waiting for the information on that to go up on line...)

Anyway, back to the fire!

Supplementing your diet- with bugs:

OK, gross. There, I said it. Eating bugs is something only to consider in the darkest of times.

But...

Well...

If things start to get hard, learning to do things like this early will make a huge difference. There are insects all over the place in the world!

High protein and the good edible ones rarely put up much of a fight!

So here is some info on it. Just to consider now...
Before we have to.

Burning things other than wood for heat:

A lot of things burn. Some of them we don't want to use for heat, like tires, but they can be in a pinch. Just, you understand, never indoors. It will kill you.

Biomass is the best/easiest source to use.

Briquettes, not just for charcoal any more!

Re: FREE STUFF, TRICKS AND DISCUSSION TO HELP US IN THESE HARD TIMES!
This part will seem trivial to a lot of people, but it's important:

When things start to go wrong and things get hard, it's more important than ever to try and be polite and courteous to others.

Let me go over that:

Politeness is an ancient survival strategy, used by the weak to manipulate the strong.

In the age of the firearm, it's more important than ever to keep this in mind.

No, it won't (most likely) stop you from being robbed, or attacked by a committed person, but most violence happens when two personalities clash, not because of predetermined planning. (Like a thief, assassin or what have you, those people have an agenda that politeness won't really effect.)

If you have to use violence, then do it. I'm not saying you need to be a doormat, just remember to be kind and gentle when you can, first. To save on problems.

Remember, you may be stressed out, angry and tired, but the police won't go away just because a depression is on. In fact, they're looking for reasons to ticket, harass and arrest you right now and that's only going to get worse as they struggle for more funds.

Politeness should be the first weapon you deploy in almost every situation.

If nothing else it will throw people off when you skip being rude and go straight to lethal!

Wild bread starter and how to keep it alive:

This will also work for instant yeast or any sort you buy at the store. (Which is easier and probably will taste better unless you like sourdough bread as a rule.)

Bread is one of those things that makes society what it is. Without bread we feel like something is missing.

*I say this after months of low carb dieting and I don't miss it, but as a society, it's there. A lot of people will love you if you can keep them in bread and have something to put on it, even if they have enough other food.

And here is a way to keep your starter going. This is the way it was done for... thousands of years. If they could do it in Rome, we can do it now!

How to fell a tree:

Need wood? Well, picking it up off the ground is the best way to get it, but if that's all gone, having this down is a good idea.
