Though I'm talking about hard times, not doomsday, a lot of the information overlaps. Still, the idea is to make things work. If the options are starvation of maybe, possibly, in the future, coming down with a disease you probably won't get from having flour, corn or sugar, or even eating foods that aren't organic, then... Survive first. I can't, in good conscience, recommend that people buy organic at this time, unless they have a lot of money and are wishing to buy a good luck charm. Organic foods do tend to be slightly "cleaner" than not, but the difference is tiny. Not because the regular produce and meat is all that good, but because loop holes have allowed for an increasing amount of stuff to be loaded into the food supply. In some cases it's been required, even for the organic farmer. If you have twenty dollars to spend on stocking up, don't spend it on something that costs three times more than it needs too for the hope of benefit later. There are risks to everything, but not eating is faster than most of them. Last Edited by Alex A Madison on 09/06/2011 02:10 AM DON'T BE A DUMB-ASS, READ A BOOK! The simple answer is this: Learn to shape metal and you can make your own tools. No one can hold you hostage as easily if you have the ability to do things for yourself and once the Home Depot is closed down or too expensive for you, making your own stuff is incredibly useful. A good smith can even make their own bolts, screws and so on. Even if you just read over the info here, it may help you later on. Or a stranger you meat in a bar. Don't let that lead to an even greater hardship! I'm not talking about STD's here. That's a hard one to deal with, but a separate issue. Alex A Madison (OP) User ID: 804025 United States 09/06/2011 03:44 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Crime prevention at home: First, if allowable in your area, get a dog. A hassle? Yes. but if you train them halfway well and give them love, they will not let anyone sneak up on you at night. Second, remember that even as things get tight, people committing crimes don't want attention. Set up a few "rattle can" lines around the parameter of your home. Wire can be stepped over, so remember to add in the next line lower and about fourteen inches in front of the more obvious one. This will only rattle some cans together, but the jolt of that will send a lot of people running, at least suspecting they alerted you to what was coming. The fact that you have a preparation will frighten some away. For the rest, well then you have a good reason to shoot without waiting to see what they want first, especially at night. Third, have people around. Another hassle? Mainly. But we instinctively know, no matter how foolish we are, not to take on a large group of people alone and if we know that were going to be in for a fight, we all (humanity) will go after a single person before a group. Why? Because unless you're superman, a group of dedicated people is going to kick your butt! *Also works on zombies. **Remember to aim for the head. DON'T BE A DUMB-ASS, READ A BOOK! Alex A Madison (OP) User ID: 804025 United States 09/06/2011 04:20 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The Cheapest Transportation: Walk: For cost effective travel, you can't beat it. Yes, it's harder and slower than driving a car, and no, I don't think anyone will walk more now just to save money later, even though it's a solid idea in a lot of areas. The fact is though that you should mentally reset your mental range of how far is too far to walk to at least five miles. That leaves you a ten mile round trip if leaving from home. That's not too much to ask, unless you have health problems! ______________________________________________________________ Bike: A cheap one can be had on sale for a lot less than you might think. I once picked up two fifteen hundred dollar touring bikes for a hundred dollars each. They hadn't even been used! So check out garage sales and look at yard signs. You probably don't need much and as a bonus even someone with a basic tool kit can do a lot more on a bicycle than a car. ____________________________________________________________ Public transportation: yes, it's not that comfortable. Yes, people are annoying and it often smells, depending on local. It's also the next cheapest way to travel in most places. So if it comes down to the wire, buckle down and get on that bus! *Baring zombie attack. Duh. Those things are death traps if there are Zombies about. ____________________________________________________________ A scooter or vespa: Cost effective, and easy to use. Yes, that's all the perks there. You'll look like a freak, at least until everyone else is walking and looking on as you zip by in envy. That'll show them. ____________________________________________________________ Carpool, Vanpool, bumming a ride: It works, but most people don't like the inconvenience very well. Still, if you have a community of people with common interests, sharing a ride can really work. The trick here is making sure you use someone else' vehicle so that if the others (not you, of course!) short them on gas money and upkeep it doesn't come out of your pocket. __________________________________________________________ Motorcycle: Good on gas millage, poor on insurance. Might as well get a vespa unless, you know, your compensating for something... ____________________________________________________________ Small car: Tiny is good. Cheap is better. Get something old that you can repair yourself at home! ____________________________________________________________ Large car, Truck or SUV: OK, is there a way you can drive one of these cheaply at all? Yes. Alternative fuels. Make your own Alcohol fuel if you have the room and you can drive fairly inexpensively. Check out more about that here: [link to journeytoforever.org] ____________________________________________________________ Horses and mules: Really, if you have land, their cheap enough to keep. The really high fees for horses only come when you live in a city and have to stable one. That said... They aren't that useful. There, I said it. I even have four of the thing in the back yard here. Totally wasted. You can't take them on the road and unless your a trail rider for a living or make money raising and training other peoples horses, you'll never get your money back on them. They aren't that great as pets either. ___________________________________________________________ Private Jet: I don't have one of these in my back yard, but thought I'd add it in for color. You don't really get a lot more expensive than these, unless you buy a cruise ship to travel in. If you can do that... Take me with you? DON'T BE A DUMB-ASS, READ A BOOK! This doesn't have to be some kind of huge zombie apocalypse situation. Just being poor and desperate can do the trick here! Obviously, if you have funds now, make a point of stocking up on a few big boxes of kitchen matches, or even better, strike anywhere matches, and store them in a clean and sealed jar. This way they won't pick up moisture from the air over time and if they light, not a huge deal. The glass will get hot, but it won't light the house on fire. But if you can't afford matches, what do you do? Alex A Madison (OP) User ID: 759915 United States 09/07/2011 02:26 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This part will seem trivial to a lot of people, but it's important: When things start to go wrong and things get hard, it's more important than ever to try and be polite and courteous to others. Let me go over that: Politeness is an ancient survival strategy, used by the weak to manipulate the strong. In the age of the firearm, it's more important than ever to keep this in mind. No, it won't (most likely) stop you from being robbed, or attacked by a committed person, but most violence happens when two personalities clash, not because of predetermined planning. (Like a thief, assassin or what have you, those people have an agenda that politeness won't really effect.) If you have to use violence, then do it. I'm not saying you need to be a doormat, just remember to be kind and gentle when you can, first. To save on problems. Remember, you may be stressed out, angry and tired, but the police won't go away just because a depression is on. In fact, they're looking for reasons to ticket, harass and arrest you right now and that's only going to get worse as they struggle for more funds. Politeness should be the first weapon you deploy in almost every situation. If nothing else it will throw people off when you skip being rude and go straight to lethal!
